in crypto •  5 years ago

Bradley Kent “Brad” Garlinghouse (born February 6, 1971, in Topeka, Kansas), holds a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is CEO of financial technology company Ripple. He was formerly the CEO and Chairman of Hightail (formerly YouSendIt), the file sharing site. Prior to Hightail, he was President of Consumer Applications at AOL for two years, after his role as Senior Vice President at Yahoo! he was running its Communications business which included the Homepage, Flickr, Yahoo! Mail, and Yahoo! Messenger.

Garlinghouse also worked at Silver Lake Partners, at Ventures, at Home Network, SBC Communications and he was a CEO of Dialpad Communications. He is an active angel investor in over 40 companies including hardware company Pure Storage, AI startup Diffbot, and Indigo Agriculture. He is a board member at Animoto, and OutMatch. He previously held board positions at Ancestry.com, and Tonic Health.

 Before Ripple

Prior to his foray into Ripple and blockchain technology, Garlinghouse was CEO of file collaboration service Hightail, having previously spent two years as President of Consumer Applications at AOL. This was followed by a seminal five-year period Yahoo!, where he held multiple positions, including Senior Vice President. While at Yahoo!, Garlinghouse ‘famously’ wrote an internal memo calling for changes within the young internet company, which became known as the Peanut Butter Manifesto. In short, this internal memo chastised the company for spreading its resources too thinly, much like peanut butter, instead of curating more of a laser focus on winnable areas of the internet.

The time before Yahoo! was spent as CEO of Dialpad Communications, with management positions at SBC Communications and @Home Network before that.

 Ripple and XRP

Garlinghouse joined Ripple, the global blockchain payment company, in 2015. Initially the company’s President and COO, he became CEO in January 2017 and is also a member of the board of directors. Utilizing the Ripple protocol, Ripple’s ledger includes a native digital currency, called XRP. Not without its controversies, Garlinghouse’s employment and involvement within the company was one of the acrimonious reasons for a co-founder, Jed McCaleb, to leave Ripple and setup the Stellar Development Foundation; developing the Stellar protocol and digital asset Lumens (XLM). The remaining animosity between two companies and subsequent supporters of each ecosystem is well documented.

 Other Work

In addition to his work with Ripple, Garlinghouse also sits on the board of directors of Animoto, a cloud-based video creation service, and OutMatch an online recruitment tool. He has previously held board positions at Ancestry.com and Tonic Health.
