If you are short it won't matter unless the one time you are wrong the market moves more than it cumulatively moved the other 9 times, of course most traders under perform compared to the index performance. Also being wrong or right in a synthetic position won't matter at all, apart from any potential fees for whatever instrument you buy. Your losses are heavily insured. It's the same sort of thing that farmers do to mitigate commodity catastrophes.
