Hey guys,
Are you feeling the cold? How about something a little different to keep you warm? A French company called Qarnot has developed a home heater called the QC1 which heats your living room nicely but has the advantage of paying for itself over time by mining different cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Bitcoin and Litecoin. According to Quarnot, the heater costs $3500 but will earn you around $120 of Eth per month. This could come in mightily handy in time as prices start to rocket. Crypto mining generates a lot of heat and the traditional way of mining is to use fans to cool computers down, so this is an ingenious way to kill two birds with one stone. Keep your home warm and earn yourself some much needed crypto. What's not to like? The heater is controlled through an app on your smartphone, which also tells you how much has been mined. All in all I think this is a very interesting innovation, and certainly worth a look. One would have to assess for themselves whether buying one of these heater cum miner's is a worthwhile investment or not. I like the idea I must say.
Not sure the demand for these will hold considering Ethereum is switching to Proof of Stake. I can't imagine the rest sticking with Proof of Work considering the high electricity consumption it takes to "print currency". My son is mining Ethereum and does heat his apartment in the winter with it. We have the lowest power rates here in Washington State, about 8 cents per KwH, so it makes more sense here compared to the national average of 12 cents or 30 cents in Germany and Denmark. Bulgarian electricity is still a bargain at 10 cents per KwH. Not sure what he's going to do in the summer though, probably just have the one room closed off to the rest of the house and let it get hot. Something like that would be a lot easier to do with the mining setup in the picture above.
