We all know that Bitcoin has had a stellar year with a high close to US$20,000. But quite a few people are taking note of Ripple.
Its current price as at the end of 2017 is $2.26. Its price at the beginning of 2017 was $0.006. This means that Ripple has increased by a MASSIVE 35,000%!
So is 2018 going to be the year when the Ripple turns into a tidal wave? No one can predict for sure but Ripple is now the second most valuable cryptocurrency behind Bitcoin, with a total market value that touched the US$100 billion mark before falling back a bit.
Ripple has definitely built momentum so it is certainly very possible that Ripple will continue its upward swing.

In my opinion, XRP has one good point: a near real time validation/ transfer / confirmation time. Really cool capacity when comparing to other coin (BTC, ETH,...) validation time. But this coin is also very centralized (was near totaly premined, and is not mineable) ... Bank and centralized organisation will like XRP !!!, not sure that other one (miner and community) will like... But for sure, it was the best profitable coin in 2017 ! And has potential to continue to grow and overtake BTC marketcap really soon, if banks and other actors continue to invest in it.... :)

So the upside is that the more that the big banks and corporations jump into Ripple the more it will increase in value. The downside is that it will end up being controlled by a very few so that it could end up being very restrictive and expensive, sort of the opposite of what blockchain is all about.
