About a year ago I had a small mining rig build with AMD graphics card - at that time it was the only choice as NVIDIA cards were far less effective. Than I switched to NVIDIA Geforce 970 for gaming purposes and forgot about mining crypto with GPU as the Chinese farms dominated the market.
Recently, just out from curiosity, I checked how the mining looks now for both GPU products. As it turned out, NVIDIA seems to catch up on this field.
Take a look at https://whattomine.com - a very useful website from small miners.
If we pick one AMD RX 480 card for comparison, the most profitable coin is Etherum, which brings $0.76 profit a day.
If we pick one Geforce 1070 card, the most profitable coin is LBRY which gives $1.16 profit a day.
So, the Geforce 1070 gives about 52% more profit than RX 480 while costing about 70% more. This is not such a huge difference as it was just a year ago, when AMD GPUs dominated the mining market. It seems that both the hardware and, what's probably more important, the software were greatly improved.
So, if you have an NVIDIA card you can go to https://whattomine.com and see what's most profitable at the moment. Currently I have access to free electricity so with my fellow Geforce 970 I am mining around $1 a day. It's not much but I can invest it in various crypto currencies - like steem:) And hopefully increase my profits in the future. In the next few days I'm gonna make a tutorial about mining on NVIDIA GPU so please feel free to follow me if you're interested in it.
Cheers!
Kinda a Big catch, free electricity.
But yes, if you are going to mine with a graphics card, pick the right one that mines best for the crypto currency of choice.

Yeah, you're right, but even if you factor the electricity cost, you're still making some profit.

Just started mining with my 980 and considering putting together a mining rig on the cheap using second hand components. We'll see how that works out haha

Thanks...really clear and to the point.
I'm interested in long term prospects for Nvidia and since crypto is the future now, the usefulness of its products is going to be increasingly important.
:-) !
