World’s first cryptocurrency airport: Brisbane, Australia
Brisbane Airport (BNE) has announced that it plans to be the world’s first cryptocurrency friendly airport. Reports from local media reveal that the airport will work with local and international companies to make the airport 100% cryptocurrency friendly. They want travellers to experience an unprecedented digital currency airport experience. The partnership reinforces Brisbane Airport’s aim to promote community projects, support local businesses, improve the passenger experience, and become a leader in the airport digital innovation space.
Partnership with TravelbyBit
The airport has decided to partner with TravelbyBit, a cryptocurrency payment system, in order to allow travelers the ability to buy digitally. TravelbyBit has already partnered with a network of merchants and travellers will soon be able to use Ethereum, Bitcoin, Dash and even Steem #Steemit.
Some confirmed retailers include:
- Botanist, Spoon
- Windmill & Co.
- Forte Espresso
as well as nine awpl stores including Australian Way, Merino Collection, Carry On, Dreamtime Journey and multiple News Travels across both terminals.
Caleb Yeoh, CEO of TravelbyBit says,
“We are building a genuine use case for cryptocurrencies in the
tourism industry. The application of digital currencies in this sector
makes a lot of sense. Here at TravelbyBit we are promoting the Bitcoin
travel movement. It’s simple, safe, and there are no bank fees.”
Australia’s support for cryptocurrency
As some governments across the world have been tightening regulations and laws surrounding mining and trading cryptocurrencies, it appears as if Australia is trying to counteract the status quo, fostering development and growth.
In fact, Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley has also been labeled as a “Crypto Valley” by locals, as more than 20 merchants in this area recognize virtual payments. According to Hellemons:
“Many people around the world have made money investing in
cryptocurrencies and a lot of these people travel internationally, so
it makes sense to offer a digital currency experience within our
terminals.”
Being based in Australia, Cryptovate Investments views this unprecedented move by Brisbane Airport as a welcome change to the cryptocurrency space as the underlying technology continues towards mass adoption.
