STELLAR vs. RIPPLE
Stellar lumens may be actually a more successful wide-spread blockchain project than than its predecessor Ripple project (XRP).
First of all both projects have enormous potential of actualizing themselves as the dominating leaders of the market, however their targeted markets differ on the institutional and corporate level.
THE JOURNEY OF STELLAR
Stellar lumens was co-founded by Jed McCaleb, who was the original co-founder Mt. Gox that after McLab's departure it collapsed.
Right after that the Ripple project was co-founded by Jed McCaleb in the intent of easing transactions between big financial institutions that handle huge volume exchanges everyday. The targeted region of South East Asia was selected for this technology to be tested & implemented. The project had exponentially grew through out the years, however disagreements came along between the leading head of the company about the vision of the Ripple project.
Quick after Jed McCaleb left the Ripple project with the intent of realizing his own visionary coin by optimizing, decentralizing and making it an open-source technology based on the ripple protocol which as a byproduct the Stellar project was created early 2014.

REASONS FOR LEAVING RIPPLE BEHIND
Jed McLabed did not like the idea of a centralized, not distributed and not an open source technology that was concentrated in the hands of few. This conservative approach did not fully solved all the set out goals that the ripple project intended, thus the project lacked transparency.
MARKETS
Currently most of the demand for Ripple comes from financial institutions from south east Asia such as S.Korea or Japan, countries that are known for leading the world with their innovative technology to which cryptocurrencies fit in perfectly.
Opposite to many other alternative cryptocurrencies ripple does not aim for a distributed decentralized, non-government involved P2P transaction system. Ripple goes exact the opposite way by facilitating the current centralized transaction system only further contributing by reducing the cost and time for the transactions in motion.
Stellar
Stellar on the other hand targets partially banks and partially corporate institutions with a similar consensus protocol that the ripple project has adopted. The Stellar project has openly declared that it is ready to work with IBM themselves for the purpose of easing the transactions that take place across borders.
The banking network will range from Australia to New Zealand, to smaller countries like Fiji and Tonga and will process up 60 percent of the transactions taking place.
