As revealed in this recent article over 500 million PCs could be mining cryptocurrency. Can we know which entity might be in control of all these PCs?
Research by ad blocking firm AdGuard found 220 popular websites with an aggregated audience of half a billion people use so-called crypto-mining scripts when a user opens their main page.
So these websites are in essence stealing CPU cycles from PC owners without permission or consent? What are the ethics of this and should websites require permission?
This is really rather clever.
As long as it is a site-based script that doesn’t affect your device after you leave the site, I don’t have a problem with it.
The market will weed out the greedy ones- people have little tolerance for slow performing sites.

It is absolutely unfair and a criminal act seeing websites where people mine or even hack cryptocurrency.
It is similar with saying individuals print or mint dollars or other currencies.

I think there's a site that does this when I log on because my phone slows down badly on the site. I guess I should try to log in on the PC and check memory usage vs other similar sites.
The site is satoshi bakery.com
I have a feeling that the site is a scam, but hopefully it will payout. (I've got over 20 steem collected on there)
Nice post! Be careful on the mean ole internet

I don't personally see an ethical issue with it so long as it's a script that runs as part of the site and not software being installed on the computer without consent. I'd consider it a less annoying form of monetization than advertisements.

If you are mining, you have to prepare your computer. If you buy hash power from a website that sells space in their mine, then you pay for the power and they start paying to you 24-48 hrs after.
