Top Exchanges for new Cryptocurrency Investors
I remember when I started investing in cryptocurrency first, my first question was 'which exchange should I do this with?'
With a large number of domestic and international exchanges and considering price variations across exchanges, this is an important question. Over time, I signed up for 10's of exchanges and currently actively use ~4-5 exchanges for various reasons. I hope you find the below guide useful:
CEX.IO - For purchasing crypto through fiat currency
This is the 1st crypto-exchange I started with and still use. It is based out of London. If you want to purchase crypto with your credit card instantly, you can simply load fiat (USD, Euro, Pound) and buy a host of different cryptos such as ETH, BTC, DASH, BCH, XLM, ADA, BTG, XRP and ZEC. There is a 3.5% commission charged for this but you could compare if you are still able to get a better deal here. I have found this to be cheaper even with the commissions often times (than Koinex) but it was also expensive sometimes. But I like the advantage of using credits cards and selection of altcoins to trade.

Koinex - For purchasing crypto through fiat currency (Indian bank account holders)
Launched last year in 2016, this is my go-to exchange in India - it offers fast deposits and withdrawals, great selection of coins including XRP, BTC, LTC, BCH and ETH. Recently, they have added OMG and REQ. You can directly purchase through INR which is great. Commissions are low, however, you should compare the price with CEX for example to check if you're getting a better deal here. Sometimes, the prices are not updated as quickly as on other exchanges.

KuCoin - Investing in newly launched projects
KuCoin has had a rapid rise from being an unknown exchange about 6 months ago. They are growing at a very fast pace listing some really good projects each week with fantastic promotions. The trading fees are also very low. KuCoin and Binance have become my go to exchanges for altcoins and I have become less dependent on Bittrex now.

Binance - Altcoin trading
With a huge collection of altcoins to trade with, Finance has become a major exchange today. Offering its own coin, BNB, the exchange has really low trading fees. I use Binance and KuCoin extensively for altcoin investing.

Coinbase / GDAX - Purchasing crypto through fiat (for those with bank accounts in US only)
I'm sure you are aware of this US-based exchange. You need to have a US bank account to purchase BTC, ETH or LTC. I like the exchange since you can purchase with fiat for much lower fees than the other exchanges and also use credit / debit cards. They don't offer a wide selection of coins yet but this might change in the future.
You can receive $10 in BTC for signing up using the following affiliate link: https://www.coinbase.com/join/59a81b1f624cdd00a95edd9a
Which exchanges do you trade with? Do you have a different shortlist than this? I'd be glad to hear your thoughts.
Happy investing!

We should be pushing people away from coinbase and the centralized crap they bring

yes it is very much an issue to buy or sell for fiat. the banks will keep it that way we just need another company or 2 like coinbase so they can't take control

That will probably happen sooner than later. Blockport and probably Cobinhood might start doing so. In India, as I mentioned here, we can either use CEX or Koinex (that support multiple cryptos)
