5G literally means “fifth generation mobile networks” and refers to the coming next-generation system for connecting to the internet (as well as placing telephone calls and sending text messages), when not connected to WiFi.
Unlike current and previous reiterations, like 4G and even 3G, 5G promises great advances and capabilities in a variety of areas. In fact, it promises to open up whole new worlds previously undreamed of.
To illustrate something of the magnitudes involved (with data from Huawei), using 5G, an 8 gigabyte HD movie could be downloaded in just 6 seconds — in contrast to the 7 minutes or more it takes using 4G, and the hour or more using 3G.
5G promises much greater network speeds, greater reliability, and greater edge computing capabilities, as well as ultra-low latency — and low latency will be crucial for applications such as Driverless Cars and IoT in General. Areas such as robotics, remote surgery and next generation entertainment (to name a few), all stand to benefit greatly from 5G
In fact, the very high frequencies 5G uses will allow for a great increase in capacity and has the potential for eventually connecting billions of devices.
As 5G utilizes a high frequency band of the wireless spectrum (known as the millimeter spectrum), these waves can transfer data at very high speeds, but with the drawback that they don’t travel as far as 4G (with its longer wavelength).
Of course, with the promise of its crazy enhanced speeds, various countries are already setting up 5G networks, and people are working on establishing common standards. While a lot still remains unclear, including what myriad opportunities its deployment may yet bring, 5G is definitely coming and it’s going to be a real game changer.
NOIA Network and 5G
Both NOIA Network and 5G will transform the current landscape of the internet. That’s why we’re closely tracking the development of this new technology as we’re searching for opportunities to realize maximum synergy. One main possibility we are researching right now is how, by utilizing the potential of 5G, NOIA Network can bring storage and caching power closer to people and decrease the number of centralized network bottlenecks.
The main takeaway here? NOIA is being designed with 5G in mind to make sure that each NOIA node can be deployed to each wireless internet network station to provide the fastest possible content delivery and easily outperform traditional CDN’s.
