▲ ▲ ▲ What is the potential size of cryptocurrencies market cap? [Question]

in cryptocurrency •  7 years ago

Hello, Steemians! This time I want to make an experiment with my blogging format and ask you a question.

Introduction

So, if you check out current market capitalisation of cryptocurrencies you will see the impressive number of ... app. 160 billions on the moment of 2 September. As you can also check this number grows really fast. Finally I get a numbers:

  • 1 September 2013 - 2 billions
  • 7 September 2014 - 7 billions
  • 6 September 2015 - 4 billions
  • 4 September 2016 - 11 billions
  • 2 September 2017 - 160 billions (!)

Just look at this growth!

So, that is impressive, but one should understand that such a growth can't be endless. So, we should to find out how much potential cryptocurrency market has. 160 billions - how much is this? Let's compare:
the cap of such a giant like Apple is 847 billions that is more than 5 times bigger. However McDonalds has already been surpassed.bloggy11.png
So my question:

In your opinion how much potential have cryptocurrency market in size of capitalization?

Interesting post. I don't think we can extrapolate from the current stock market valuations of companies though. Especially not since holding coins is not comparable to owning shares. With crypto you don't own part of a company.

How to get to same estimations is quite challenging and I am certain it differs per crypto. For instance, if you want to take a swing at the future market cap op Bitcoin, you have to make assumptions. If you see Bitcoin purely as a store of value (assumption 1) and believe it will take over 10% of the function of other stores of value like gold (assumption 2), you might speculate about a value per BTC of €XXX.XXX.

For Monero this might be a very different story, and for something like Siacoin you should look at totally different things...

Hope somebody else here has good ideas on how to come up with some possible future values ;-)

Indeed, I'm sure that every cryptio will have its own destiny. Some will fly up and others will fall.
However, I offered to think about the whole market, because the average destiny of cryptos depends definetely from cap size.

You should compare cryptocurrency cap to regular money cap instead of company worth. Because thats what they are here to replace. That cap is way higher than 850billion.

I made such a comparison because of closeness of number orders (10^2 billions). Of course, world currency market is much higher in orders, so should we expect 5x growth in the next couple years ?

It's hard to tell, but I wouldn't be surprised at all. We will probably see the bitcoin dominance shrink even more and more coins reach a bill or two cap.
5x in a year seems unlikely since we have a pretty high cap already, but we should see it eventually.

By the way, I've seen an estimate of 2 trillion in next 5 years for cap recently on Youtube.
