Stanford and other top computer science universities are seeing students flock to cryptocurrency related classes.
The co-director of the Stanford Computer Security Lab, Dan Boneh, reiterated that sentiment by saying that his cryptography classes are red hot.
How red hot you might ask?
Well according to Boneh, there are over 1 million people signed up for his online class.
Yes you read that right, over 1 million!
However it's not just a west coast thing and it's not just a Stanford thing.
Others are taking notice as well.
Carnegie Mellon announced that they just hired a cryptography expert from Microsoft Research to help build out their program.
But that's not all.
The University of California and MIT also have offered cryptocurency related classes in the last couple years and they are immensely popular.
Back in 2015 Boneh said that he first started teaching a class on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies and it easily attracted over 100 students.
At that point he knew it was time to expand.
As mentioned above, his online class that he teaches through Coursera now numbers over 1 million students.
I'd say there is pretty strong demand!
This news comes on the heels of Peter Theil saying that the potential of bitcoin is bigger than what even some of the biggest bitcoin bulls think:
That wasn't the only big news of the day, however...
Also, CNBC reported earlier that according to Freelancer.com there has been an 82% surge in bitcoin related jobs in the 3rd quarter alone.
Which makes it by far the fastest growing industry on the freelance website.
Basically these statistics are just summing up what we already know...
Bitcoin and cryptocurrency is absolutely booming!
There is no guarantee that these things will be around long term, but each day that goes by that they don't go away, and the more money and people that come into the space, the likelihood of them going away gets smaller and smaller.
Stay informed my friends.

We're in uncharted waters here, folks. Anyone who compares the current state of the cryptocurrency economy to the 90s dot-com bubble is simply misinformed.
According to Statista, there are 2.32 billion mobile users worldwide in 2017, this figure is project to rise to 2.7 billion by 2020. (https://www.statista.com/statistics/330695/number-of-smartphone-users-worldwide/)
Every smartphone users is a potential cryptocurrency user! Let that sink in.

This trend toward crypto studies is a welcome change from the time when any student with half a brain gravitated directly to an MBA program, and upon graduating from said program was immediately given a starting salary of close to $100,000. All for playing with fiat currencies.
Let's hope this trend continues, and continues to grow. By studying cryptos instead of phoney fiat, students will at least be learning about money that has actual value.

It is a trend I'd like to see taken very seriously for the longevity of cryptocurrency, which in my opinion is definitely here to stay ad infinitum.

That is pretty cool... at least they are learning practical stuff and more informed people will lead to more investors and demand for cryptos. Good stuff.

Yes, also I believe they are training them in programming and coding as well as teaching all the different possible applications of cryptocurrency and blockchain. Either way, if it starts getting sticky at the college level, this space is really going to blow up.

How much are these courses? I’ve had a look but they don’t talk about cost. It seems you need to sign up for that.
I worked it out. Seems you can take the course for free but need to pay £60 to get a certificate. Well worth a look.

I've actually been thinking of taking some structured classes on crypto to see if I can learn more about it than just fumbling around random info on the internet.

You say that now but as a 5th year Uni student you can learn basically everything on the internet that you can learn at University. University has a bit of structure and it forces you to learn through tests etc, but I think if you're really into something, learning it online is much more effective.

Hello & Cheers!! I'm a content detection and information bot. You are receiving this reply because a short link or links have been detected in your post/comment. The purpose of this message is to inform your readers and yourself about the use of and dangers of short links.
To the readers of the post: Short links are provided by url shortening services. The short links they provide can be useful in some cases. Generally their use is benign. But as with all useful tools there are dangers. Short links can be used to hide all sorts of things. Quite frequently they are used to hide referral links for instance. While not dangerous this can be deceptive. They can also be used to hide dangerous links such as links to phishing sites, sites loaded with malware, scam sites, etc. You should always be extremely cautious before clicking on one. If you don't know and trust the poster don't click. Even if you do you should still be cautious and wary of any site you are sent to. It's always better to visit the site directly and not through a short link.
To the author of the post: While short links may be useful on some sites they are not needed on steemit. You can use markdown to format your links such as this link to steemit. It's as simple as
[steemit](https://steemit.com)
Unlike short links this allows the reader to see where they are going by simply hovering over the link before they click on it.Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

With each surge we gain more that will stick for the long term. My prediction is that crypto will have one or two more nasty nuclear winters but then in a final surge it will have taken over and people will want crypto and not fiat for good.

Interesting, I hadn't heard about all the academic interest but I never really thought about it either. This does seem very bullish for crypto but some of them could also be hoping to work with Jamie Dimon on the Chase Blockchain : ). I'm also wondering how 1 million people can take an online class. That doesn't seem feasible what with prerequisites and enrollments required for such a prestigious university unless they are just allowing the general public to audit the class with no interaction at all with the professor? After all, you have 7000 followers and you probably spend at least an hour or so a day on comments. Thanks for the info it is all very encouraging.

This is a great post jrcornel! I was thinking about givin some class about cryptocurrency at my University but (down here in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico) as an optional class, with your post am more confident about the results on this kind of class, in fact there are several students asking me about the subject!

I think the increasing willingness to study about crypto-currencies is a very good.
I would like to add one thing, unfortunately, as I can say from my College, the subject has not arrived here yet:
Until now, I have not heard of any research funding on my campus, which is directly attributed to study and research crypto-currencies, and everything that is related to it, as such. It will take some further time until we can see courses and research becoming mainstream on campus.
