Nvidia recently announced they were going to release a version of the 1070, the current king of Nvidia's mining GPUs, and now Asus is building one off AMD GPU:

The article doesn't explain this but these cards lack the video output codec, which makes them cheaper and simpler. I am not sure about how many lanes of PCI-Express they use, but I know for mining they only need one lane. I haven't seen photos yet of these things, but I expect they have single lane sockets (PCI-E sockets are designed so a 16x slot will accept 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x as well as 16x)
For those who declare impending doom for crypto mining, obviously the hardware people don't think that the market has too short a future, I would think they would not do this unless they expected they can sell them for a couple of years because every new card they make requires the creation of a new production line, or modification of an old one, which is an expensive process.
However, this will also be a suitable card for AI, database acceleration and other emerging OpenCL and Cuda applications.
Its not surprising that theyve started making specific mining cards. the potential revenue is massive.
for the most of this month it has been impossible to buy an amd capable mining card from any major retailer in my country (UK) scan, ccl, aria, ebuyer, overclockers ALL sold out at the begining off the month, all 2nd hand mining cards are currently 30% - 50% more expensive than usual, and are snapped up immediately.
From looking at the specs from asus, it has the usual 16x pci-e.
Its a rebranded rx470, possibly with the same mem they put in the 8gb versions (which mine faster)
The newer rx570's just came out in the middle of the mining rush, rushed out early because all the 470's and 480's were running out. gamers were complaining that they couldnt buy a card and if they could they were a ridiculous price.
I reckon asus are killing 2 birds with 1 stone with this release. providing to 2 markets (gamers, miners) and probably using all their old 470 parts and stock.
the 570 is not as fast at mining as the 470 or 480 so its a way for them to re-release an older card and still make revenue of their new 5xx series
Asrock did something similar in 2014 when we had the litecoin rush. they brought out the BTC board for mining. unfortunately for them it was at the end of the last mining rush. They had to wait 3 years to get their return.

I mine with an RX 580, have one box with a pair in it. When the miners are updated it will take advantage of faster memory and outperform the 570. For the time being it is a bit less profitable.
I think that openCL applications will give the cards a new lease on life once the mining thing dies back down in the next 2-3 years as more and more cryptos jump off the PoW bandwagon onto PoS and maybe newer methods.

I wonder if you could share any links to info on setting up an RX 580 computer for mining? Are you using Nicehash or some other mining software? I'm about to try mining again on my gaming computer with a single RX 580 and I'm seeking resources. Thanks!

Isn't this old news? They were announced quite a while ago. The reason they don't have output codec is because they are specifically built for mining. They're still 2-lane slot, and actually, initial test results show that they aren't stacking up to the claimed hashrates.

There's also an unboxing/test video of the MSI and Galaxy ones here:
The sapphire mining cards are also available for preorder on overclockers uk.
So yeah, not really new news. Sorry. :(
