The lightning network aims to solve the problem of non-confirmation of micropayments and high confirmation time of transactions. The network creates a payment channel between two peers.
Let’s take an example to understand this. Let’s say Alice has 10 BTC and Bob has 5 BTC when a channel was created between them. Now, Alice pays to Bob 1 BTC everyday for 6 days. In the channel, there will be 6 transaction records in the local ledger copies of Alice and Bob. Now, when Alice and Bob decides to close the channel and commit the transaction to the Blockchain, there will only be 1 transaction indicating Alice paying 6 BTC to Bob.

They dont have to go obsolete, they are alt for a reason, plus every coin has its market, and the market really determines, however ifthe coin has been counterfeited in some type of way, then it may be excommunicated as they say...wooosh away

I've never read about the permission system! I didn't know that it was important.
I think that all of these alts got popular because they're basically what people wanted to have for Bitcoin. If Bitcoin improves and becomes better than the alternate solutions that people have, and it's the biggest one, then I don't know why people wouldn't use it.
Well, except for the fact that Bitcoin is becoming cheaper by the day and, if LN is not adopted majorly soon, it'll be easier for other alts to take over the market just for the fact that they're used more.

Great opinions. Clearly bitcoin is the king of crypto and that will not change anytime soon. But this doesn't mean this is the end for altcoins, we'll maybe it will be for the useless ones... But good projects that already have community support will keep growing along with the king. Cheers!

I find the last point mentioned by cedric to be extremely interesting. Success could simply be through greter network adoption. In a way, thats why windows is the biggest OS despite its security flaws and apple iphone is the best selling smartphone, despite there being better alternatives out there.
And a lot can be done by other coins to increase adoption. Even if people are misinformed about bitcoin being too expensive at $8000 and therefore choose something cheaper like ripple that is sub $1, or people may prefer ripple because it works well with banks in the future and people just end up trusting banks more than a decentralized system. Through clever marketing, people can be made to believe and trust dictators and vote in a certain way. Xvg could be in the top 5 after yesterday's announcement, who knows!
