What is cryptocurrency?


A cryptocurrency (or crypto currency) is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange that uses strong cryptography to secure financial transactions, control the creation of additional units, and verify the transfer of assets.

let’s step back and briefly examine what we mean by terms like cryptocurrency and altcoin. A cryptocurrency, broadly defined, is virtual or digital money which takes the form of tokens or “coins.” While some cryptocurrencies have ventured into the physical world with credit cards or other projects, the large majority remain entirely intangible.

There are 5 major types of cryptocurrency, each with its own unique features. Most people know that cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin) are used to transfer value. It's lesser known, though, that cryptocurrencies fulfill many other purposes in a variety of different industries.
