As reported by the Japan Times News website, Bank of Japan's chief financial technology officer Yuko Kawai said the central bank does not see the need to create its own crypto-currency, as citizens prefer to use money.
We do not consider creating our own criptomoeda, since there is no demand. Do we really need it? In fact citizens prefer to use the money", Kawai said.
According to the Bank for International Settlements, the value of physical money (notes and coins) was 20 percent of Japan's GDP in 2016, the highest among developed countries. Kawai argues that for some services in Japan, you can still only pay cash, so it's hard for citizens to accept a digital alternative.
"The fact is people do not experience any inconvenience and do not download mobile apps. The demand for money is very large and our job is to satisfy it", added Kawai.
Generational change may change the trend, according to Kawai, crypto-coins still can not be considered as a means of payment, as technology is still in the early stages of development, and the crypto-currency market is very speculative.
