Foldingcoin, gridcoin, curecoin, primecoin. What's better?
I am currently working to form a reasonable solution to answer that question. Let's do a side-by-side comparison.
The common plan of action:
- A short description. (A central message/idea), chart.
- Total supply / circulating supply.
- Price.
Additional information: after all comparison I'll try to make recommendations about investment in a particular cryptocurrency.
Foldingcoin is a Stanford University project for which computing cycles are used to simulate protein folding, for computational drug design and other molecular dynamics problems.
Total supply: 1,000,000,000
Price: $0.02
Gridcoin is a decentralized, open source math-based digital asset (cryptocurrency). It performs transactions peer-to-peer cryptographically without the need for a central issuing authority. Gridcoin was the first block chain protocol that delivered a working algorithm that equally rewards and cryptographically proves solving BOINC hosted work, which can be virtually any kind of distributed computing process. BOINC is an open-source volunteer oriented computing grid that combines the processing power of all individual users for the purposes of scientific research. It's free, and harnesses the unused clock cycles from processors and graphics cards to attempt to cure cancer/aids/ebola/malaria, map the milkyway, crack enigma codes, etc...
Circulating Supply: 390,000,000
Price: $0.10
Curecoin is a decentralized and open-source cryptocurrency built on the Folding@Home project managed by Stanford University. The Folding@Home project is a distributed computing project that focuses on disease research through the simulation of protein folding (pictured above). Contributors to the Folding@Home project are able to earn Curecoin (CURE) when folding through the Curecoin team. Curecoin exists as a means of compensation for computing resources used for this scientific research. Curecoin can be "mined" on any computer by any individual willing to help contribute. Most currencies are either in the CPU/GPU stage, or in the ASIC stage. CureCoin can be earned with both. Folders use high-end GPUs and CPUs to fold proteins, earning a proportional amount of coins set-aside for their contributions. Miners mine with SHA256 ASICs as usual, securing the blockchain for the CureCoin network. Whether you are heavily-invested in ASIC equipment or still have GPUs and CPUs, you can participate. Due to the nature of folding (diverse, constantly changing, not easily predictable), GPUs and CPUs will both always be relevant, so an investment in consumer hardware isn’t wasted.
Circulating Supply: 23,700,000
Price: $0.18
Primecoin is an innovative cryptocurrency, a form of digital currency secured by cryptography and issued through a decentralized mining market. Derived from Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin, Primecoin introduces an unique form of proof-of-work based on prime numbers. The innovative prime proof-of-work in Primecoin not only provides security and minting to the network, but also generates a special form of prime number chains of interest to mathematical research. Thus primecoin network is energy-multiuse, compared to bitcoin.
Circulating Supply: 19,400,000
Price: $0.57
The main decision.
Curing Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, preventing viruses, and designing next-level pharmaceuticals is awesome. What if we could put these together, to build a coin secured and run by crypto, mined with SHA256, and supported by cancer-curing research?
I hope you've read this article not for the money. BUT! What would you rather invest in? No matter what are looking for inveting, this investment will allow combat many with different types of diseases.
What's the fastest way to get profit from this investment?
Primecoin for now, just buy it now - this is my recommendation. Curecoin the same. Foldingcoin and Gridcoin: it's better for you to buy Foldingcoin and Gridcoin after a little bit of a slump.
Primecoin? That coin hasn't seen a new release in three years:
https://github.com/primecoin/primecoin
Ranked 74th according to Coingecko developer score:
https://www.coingecko.com/en?page=2&sort_by=developer_score
It's an interesting coin, but apparently little more than a curiosity nowadays.
Also, why would you like to have a coin mined with SHA-256, and 'supported' by cancer-curing research? Is it not better to have a coin mined by cancer-curing research itself, and ditch the SHA-256 altogether? The last thing we need is more SHA-256 coins.

I'm not talking about the technology, I mean the short-term investment for taking advantage. We just have to ditch Bitcoin! Is that what you're proposing?

No, I am proposing to ditch SHA-256 in research coins. There's plenty of computing work to be done for science, no need to waste precious computing power on repetitive hashing algorithms.
Regarding your investment advice, I think investing in coins which aren't developed any more isn't a very good idea. But I guess my investing strategy is more cautious than yours.
