Hey, the documentation for this is really lacking, and should indeed be improved or made much more obvious than it is!
That said, it's a question that has come up many times, I haven't tried it myself but this looks like a good tutorial on how to transfer STEEM to steemit:

steemit should have a button on their wallet which make users to transfer more easily than to go look up tutorial...it website is lacking a transfer or deposit buttons next to their wallet is what i mean...
