How I lost $1300 in JAXX wallet

On the 10th of June I used the shapeshift functionality inside of JAXX to convert ETH to DASH (this process usually takes from 5 minutes to an hour). When I came back after eating dinner I check on my DASH total and found it to be a zero balance. At that point I went to all the support documentation and read what I should do before I email support on this issue. The resolution that was told to me was to refresh the dash blockchain, and again, nothing, zero balance. At that point I was getting a little anxious and wanted my money back, so I emailed support and waited.

In the meanwhile of me waiting (uggh), I started reading some of their documentation about how they keep my wallet addresses like, public keys, private keys, backing up your special phrase etc. I started clicking through backup area, and there you can choose to show your public and private keys. So I copied each public key and checked it on the blockchain on this site https://chainz.cryptoid.info/dash/. To my surprise my missing dash was there, all $1300. The interesting thing is they weren't in JAXX even after refreshing the blockchain. 2 days passed and no email back from support, not even an autoresponse for that matter.

Taking matters into my own hands

I decided to do something unorthodox and download the official DASH wallet and installed it on my computer. I then took the private keys for all 3 generated keys for my dash in JAXX and imported them into my newly installed (more reliable lol) official dash wallet. Within 2 minutes my beautiful Dash popped in the balance and a smile broke on my face. :::: wipes his brow ::::

Conclusion to this poorly coded JAXX'd up wallet

Not many people know how the blockchain works, but I can imagine it can be very intimidating when your investments disappear like a thief in the night or is it just an illusion. I'm sure if I have experienced this issue, numerous others have experienced the same, but maybe they thought that their money was stolen. I recently read a post https://cointelegraph.com/news/jaxx-wallet-vulnerability-users-report-400k-funds-thefts about thefts from the vulnerability in JAXX if you were one of the victims make sure you check your blockchain for your wallet before thinking the worst, because I did! Please check your addresses first before you jump to conclusions thinking the worse like I did. Anyways, I hope none of our steemians were effected by the JAXX.

If you need any help with reading the blockchain I can write a post explaining on how to do that. Please let me know.

I hope I helped you or gave you some new information that you were not aware of before. I am grateful for all of you that have followed me so far and if you are new to steem follow me and I will definitely follow you back.

By the way if you are new to cryptocurrency and want to get started on the right foot click on the Coinbase referral link below and we each can get $10 dollars for signing up and spending at least 100 dollars!

I was sad for you and then happy. Great story! :)

:3 Thanks Eirik.

wow you where very lucky there i would not have a clue where to start if it was me and after the news about the jaxx wallet and hacking stuff i have decided to remove it from my computer i am using the Exodus now works well so far lets see how it goes over the months but i think cold storage is the way to go for large amounts of coins

Yes, Exodus is much better than JAXX, but like you said for large amounts of coins I would trust cold storage unless you use them for trading or purchases. Just know sometimes there are delays using the shapeshifter, but if you put in a ticket to Exodus they will help expedite the ticket resolution. =) Thanks for the reply, and I followed you, please follow back.
Mark

Just deleted JAXX and switched to Exodus. Would definitely recommend. Thanks for posting!

Thanks Toby, glad I can help our community. Please follow, I will do the same.

So glad you found your Dash. I would always just use the official Dash wallet going forward!

Thank you. And I will for sure use the official dash wallet from now on. Please follow me, I'll do the same. =)

This is a great post. hope that this post can help people in the same situation.

I lost 100 Dollar in shape shift as well, but even it is still in bolckchain, how can we do to get it out?

well you can get the private key from the backup area in JAXX and you can recover your money. If you need to contact me please message me on steemit chat and I can try and help you out. If you're money is in the blockchain its safe and you can recover it.

Thank you so much. It looks like the block chain transfer failed yesterday. After almost 24 hours, the money get back to my GNT account. Thank you.

Hey, I just found this post.
I also have issue with jaxx, recently my jaxx wallet was “updated” and I lost all my cryptos- ETH and BTC that I bought through exchange. When I initially created my jaxx/chrome extension, I was not prompted to save back up phrase, so I didn’t, but I did create a pin.
Now jaxx support’s telling me that I lost all my cryptos because I can’t restore my initial wallet without a backup phrase..
I have all the ETH and BTC addresses that I send my funds to form crypto exchange and I see them on blockexplorer.com.
Do you think I can still get access to my funds?
Thanks.

Without the 12 word phrase, I am afraid you are out of luck. The PIN is just an extra layer of security, but the 12 word phrase is crucial.

That's what jaxx's support’s telling me. Thanks anyway.
