I am a total novice here on steemit and also today is my first time of hearing the word "Cryptocurrency". I have been trying for few hours to wrap my head around what cryptocurrency is all about, but am still getting lost at a point.
Hoping if a good steemian would be kind enough to break it down for a novice like me to understand.

It's a digital token that has a means of value by people. It can be traded for other types of currencies including the dollar supported in your country!
There are a lot of different currencies out there, and each and every one is unique it their own way. They have different goals they want to achieve, different problems they want to solve.
This currency you have wondered by is called Steem. I'm new here on this site too, but from what I understand people post and it gets voted and it generates revenue for the poster. It's not that simple but sort of the gist.
