The Soul of blockchain?
Most company names are unique and they sometimes give the core business of the company. Seele is attempting to do away with the past understanding of blockchain and industry standards that have been there. In order to create a better path for blockchain, it has to lead the restructuring of the blockchain industry. Currently, blockchain standards are arguably set by Ethereum as most decentralized applications opt to base their apps on the blockchain despite its numerous challenges.
✅However, in recent times, a new trend has emerged where decentralized applications start on Ethereum before progressing to their own mainnet. This progress is much needed if blockchain is to be taken up by the vast majority of the world’s population. Seele however believes in a change right at the core of blockchain, change in consensus mechanisms, change in architecture, sort of like a complete overhaul of the structure but maintaining the functions that blockchain is meant to accomplish. Seele proposes changes that would position it to become the soul of blockchain, being like the compass and standard of what future protocols should look like. It is a bold move; however, it is one that is required. As blockchain continues to grow, measures have to be put in place enabling future demands to be met by decentralized applications.
Necessary Changes
✅If one were to take a look at the decentralized applications being developed, one would notice that they are mostly built for uptake by the mainstream public. Some are social media platforms, some offer cloud storage service, they basically take the concept of normal applications and make them decentralized to provide more transparency and security. With the privacy issues that have been witnessed recently, transparency and security, especially of data, is of importance to most people in this age. People want to know whether their data is being collected or not, and how their data is being used by these companies. Such ethical concerns may trigger movement from traditional applications to decentralized applications which offer transparency in everything that they do. There is also the aspect of fraud, identity theft and such offences that people suffer through the internet. This is also accelerating the potential need for people to move to decentralized applications that offer safety from these offences.
Imagine a scenario where everyone in Facebook moves to one of the decentralized applications on any blockchain protocol, it would definitely lead to a slowdown of the entire protocol. Seele is preparing for such migrations that are set to come in the future as more people accept the usefulness of blockchain and move from traditional centralized applications.
✅There are changes that are needed before major migrations occur. These changes will address the challenges plaguing blockchain currently. For those who have used the Ethereum network, there was a time when the video game, Crypto Kitties caused the entire protocol to slow down. There were many players hence the transaction request soared causing even other DApps to have experience delays in the services they offered. It has become increasingly clear over the years that scalability is an issue that will have to be addressed before any mainstream uptake of decentralized applications occur. There is also a great need for protocols to consider the working environment of developers that work on their applications on these protocols. There are lots of coding languages that developers use to write their applications, support for all these codes in a protocol would greatly help improve the progress of blockchain and decentralized applications.
Seele Applications on Different Institutions
Seele has great platform that has the potential to change blockchain and the world. However, this platform can only be lauded if it actually has real-world use cases that majority of the population will appreciate. On their website, Seele has listed some of the areas it believes its platform can change. Let’s take a look at Seele’s platform design and its usefulness applicable.
➡️Storage solution. Hospitals, banks, government institutions and academic institutions generate tremendous amounts of data daily. This data is crucial for future consultations and even for research and development carried out in different fields of research and study. Protection and easy access of data is crucial. Centralized systems have already proved vulnerable. About 16 hospitals were hit with ransomware attacks in the United Kingdom in 2017 undermining the sensitive data they had on their patients. Seele’s storage solution is quite unique even when compared to other blockchain protocols. For public blockchains, data storage is quite a problem, especially for big corporations such as hospitals or governments which store sensitive data. Some decentralized applications are built to offer solutions through blockchain but the public chain set up hinders institutions from taking them up. The trustless aspect of public blockchain creates this privacy problem, where hospitals or any other large institution is not comfortable with their data on the public chain, while on chain data storage creates the problem of capacity.
✅Seele’s protocol will allow decentralized applications to offer both on chain and offchain storage solutions for hospitals. Once data has been generated in a hospital, they can be stored offchain using the interplanetary file system. Before the data is stored off-chain, it will be uploaded to the blockchain, hashed for identification, to easily retrieve the data when needed and then copied and stored using IPFS. The hash is important for identifying the node in which the data was stored. Easy retrieval and secure storage of data would provide the healthcare system with an important cushion. Institutions would have less to worry about the technicalities and focus more on administrative issues and better service provision to their clients.
✅Continuing with storage solutions, during data transfer, an encapsulated sandbox and virtual machine will be used to further protect data while being transferred. Furthermore, they offer compatibility with blockchain protocols from previous generations such as Ethereum and EOS thus making cross-platform communication and transfers possible. Decentralized healthcare applications running on these protocols, for example, can share patient data in emergencies that where a different DApp running on Seele can help in.
➡️Scalable, flexible and efficient network. Moving from the common and limited single chain structure, Seele’s platform design supports multiple chains for better scalability, flexibility and overall efficiency of the platform. Seele’s platform design includes a novelty heterogeneous forest network that will see a ‘meta chain’ supported or built up by numerous chains. The principle of specialization is used in this case. Each chain that ranks below the meta chain will have specific uses they specialize in. They will have their own set of rules and parameters enabling them to perform functions tailor-made for specific scenarios. The heterogeneous forest network helps Seele achieve their target of having faster transaction speeds for the overall efficiency of the protocol.
➡️Previously mentioned was the protocol’s ability to communicate or share data between platforms. Strengthening this function is a proposed protocol, known as the Value Transport Protocol and a Value Chain HTTP. Value Transport Protocol (VTP) offers a new dimension in transactions between platforms. Sharing of data and seamless communication is a priority for Seele and future blockchains therefore the VTP comes as a great addition to an endowed platform. A communication threshold or standard will be set up by the VTP; those platforms that will have met this standard can communicate and share their data comfortably using the Seele protocol. These new protocols broaden the scope of blockchain and may be a standard in future blockchain protocols.
✅Sharing data, as seen before, would be great for the healthcare system. It can also be applied to businesses with multiple centers, they can use the Seele protocol to harmonize their functions and even transfer data between two countries without having to pass through many bottle necks or bureaucracies.
➡️Adaptable consensus algorithm. You may have heard of the proof of stake or proof of work consensus mechanism which is quite common in the blockchain space. Seele however introduces a new consensus algorithm that it has dubbed the neural consensus algorithm. Seele changes the need to use the previous block when determining which block to add data onto instead opting for a virtual axis to determine the block new data will be built on. The neural consensus algorithm will allow Seele to have linear scalability such that its functions increases or becomes better with an increase in the number of nodes participating in the platform. With previous blockchain protocols, more nodes meant less efficiency but this problem can be done away with using Seele’s proposal. Linear scalability can become especially useful to organizations that run services such as social media or who have a large number of registered subscribers.
Forward Thinking
Previous blockchains have set the pace for the future of blockchain technology. Seele improves on the past mistakes that hindered the true potential of blockchain from being realized. Skeptics of blockchain technology may find it hard to disapprove it as it edges closer and closer towards mainstream adoption with the little improvements made in all areas. Seele is already setting the standard for protocols that are to come. The improvements Seele has made is ushering a new blockchain era, the 4.0 blockchain era which focuses on scalability, flexibility, energy saving and efficiency ✨
