In the past, it's seemed like the price splits at first. The value of the original coin + the value of the new coin is roughly equal to the value of the original coin before the split. In the case of Bitcoin Cash you can argue it gained it's own value, but it's hard to say if that value would be added to Bitcoin's current price if it didn't exist.
