How to get in on the ground floor?

I have always wondered how an you find a cryptocurrency solution that is in it's infant stages where regular people can mine with there everyday CPU and accumulate a significant amount of the crypto? Not interested from the "make money" perspective but more from the learn and experience the early stages of a cryptocurrency.
