Tether hack: Attacker Reportedly Steals $30 million of Digital Tokens

in cryptocurrency •  7 years ago

The company behind cryptocurrency Tether posted 19.11.2017 a post on the project website stating that it had stolen $ 30 million of hack tokens.

Tether's official website blames a hitherto unknown assailant for theft. The company wrote:

"Yesterday we discovered that funds from the tether wallet were improperly removed by malicious actions by an external attacker. Tether integrators must take immediate action to prevent further disruption of the ecosystem. $ 30,950,010 USDT was removed from the Tether Treasury Wallet on November 19, 2017 and sent to an unauthorized Bitcoin address. "

The message was no longer available on the official website at the editorial time, but only in an online archive.

The adversary's address is known to the tether developers. Because of this, an updated software version of the Tether Client has already been provided, which "locks" the known address so that, in simple terms, no transaction can be performed using the stolen tether. However, all exchanges, clients, and other tether integrations must immediately install the updated software version.

Controversy and criticism of Tether

The news comes amid a time of growing criticism and controversy surrounding the token tether.

In recent months, the company's claim has caused a sensation that it has dollar deposits for each tether. From this, many users had deduced that you could exchange tethers for real dollars. However, in the legal terms, Tether (in an older version) pointed out that tethers are not money or money and, in addition, have no legal right to disbursement or exchange of the tether for fiat money. This has been critically debated on Reddit and other platforms in that large amounts of money and "non-money" are exchanged and no legal entitlement to disbursement exists.

In addition, the unclear relationship between Tether and the Bitfinex crypto exchange on Reddit has been hotly debated in recent months. Among other things, the assumption was that the stock market could use the asset for market manipulation. The latest hack news and the removal of the message from the website after a short while are likely to fuel the controversy now.

Thank you for the news. After it, I wondered if I could steal such a sum, would I go to stealing? The question was very difficult.
