Software is the Key to IoT Security and Guess What? Blockchain can Help !

Leading
Blockchain Integration With IoT Devices for Enhanced Security (Forbes)

  • A recent study conducted by digital security firm Gemalto found that only 48% of IoT companies can accurately detect if their devices had experienced a breach, while 59% of respondents are uncertain as to who is responsible for their IoT security.
  • Issues such as undetected malware, data leakage and hackers controlling devices remotely continue to persist, resulting in blockchain technology attracting more attention as a viable solution.
  • IoTeX is one of the companies at the forefront of providing a solution through their ‘blockchains within a blockchain’ architecture. The protection they are able to provide is based on cryptography designed to be a one-way function that cannot be re-engineered, thus providing much needed security from hackers.

Comments

  • One point that I have flagged is that while many commentators talk about IoT as if the hardware is the main feature, it is in fact the software that really provides the value.
  • Much of the hardware needed for IoT has become very cheap to buy, a factor that has helped drive applications.
  • But this can come at a price, as cheap hardware often either has poor security or it comes with a fairly open default option.
  • It is my expectation that the growth of IoT applications will drive a parallel growth in demand for cyber security tools.

Thales has bought Gemalto a few months ago

Thales is a European expert in cybersecurity and defense.

As I turn more cautious on financial markets, this is definitely a company to look at !

IoT is super vulnerable. I think I'd rather just wait until next gen. No need to have my fridge collect data on me. What are the best use cases for IoT? I actually don't even know.

@vlemon has set 1.500 STEEM bounty on this post!

Very interesting article, I would like to add few things, so situation that we currently have, like large scale exchanges are hacked, a lot of assets was and are theft from the wallets and hackers getting smarter and authorities gain huge loses because of that. So we have Risk: The restrictions imposed by a traditional central-authority trust model have helped make the IoT vulnerable. Most notably Mirai-style botnets, which recently allowed hackers to easily take over thousands of IoT devices. Only protecting the IoT devices with default passwords allowed hackers to launch Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
But we have Solution: Blockchain helps secure the IoT by providing a distributed trust model. The blockchain removes the single-point-of-failure, in turn enabling device networks to protect themselves in other ways, for example by allowing the nodes within a given network to quarantine any nodes that start behaving unusually.
Very good topic. Appreciated :)

Great addition and I can only say: Amen 🙏 !
Thank you for passing back with such knowledge, come back and earn steem with @steem-bounty ;).

I'm still new in the steemit community, so all the things about bounties and that kind of things are new for me. So, my friend please don't get me wrong but what do you mean by that steem-bounty and what I supposed to do? ;)

By posting good comments, I upvote your post and you will have a share of the STEEM Bounty in 7 days ;).

The race between security and hacking is an endless wheel, computer security experts cannot fall asleep because otherwise hackers will eat us alive

It has always been the case between robbers and policemen 👮‍♀️. It just continues !

Looking forward to read from you.

Thanks @vlemon and @goldeninvestor for bringing up the sum good point.
I guess blockchain and IOT are very new entry, so potential bugs yet to be discovered. Did not heard till now if anybody is trying to integrate the both technology. Hope for best in future.

You are welcome
Happy to share this news.

Nice, you got an awesome upgoat, thanks to @vlemon

This is a great example of why blockchain is key for futue automation efforts as leaving these infrastructures prone to attacks can be a slippery slope. I think that we are only a hack away for this to become obvious to the hardware makers. Incredible considering that evidence has already been seen with example like the webcam vulnerabilities and the recent facetime bug. It will be an interesting space to see going forward.

Hacking very like to intrusion crypto currency and often succeeds.
The units that keep the crypto currency are mostly irresponsible. Even if you put it in your own wallet, you will also encounter a phishing website. Steal your password.
