Traders are waiting in nervous anticipation of the Wraith Protocol.

Is it really going to launch? Will the Wraith Protocol legitimize Verge as a contending privacy currency? Or is it all just vaporware? Traders seem to be holding the price of Verge steady as they wait for news to break.

Verge has experienced quite a bit of controversy over the last few weeks. Touted as a privacy coin, yet not having implemented privacy features that rivals such as Monero already have implemented, a bitter rivalry is stirring between the two coins and their supporters.

While Verge does use a TOR-enabled wallet to protect users, the blockchain itself is a public ledger. The hope is that the Wraith protocol will lend far greater security and privacy to the coin via stealth addresses and transactions. By "flipping a switch", one could theoretically choose to send transactions privately, not visible on the public blockchain. Whether or not this will work in real-life application remains to be seen.

Verge does have one important advantage over Monero - atomic swapping. Once this feature is up-and-running, the coin will be able to be directly exchanged with other atomic-swap capable coins (Bitcoin, Litecoin, Vertcoin, Decred, etc.) from other users without a centralized exchange.

The planned release of the next step in the Wraith protocol was scheduled for the end of December 2017. Verge has delayed releases in the past. Will it happen again?

This one is a tough call. If the Wraith protocol launches successfully, this coin could easily reach $1 within minutes of the breaking news, giving it a market cap of around $15 billion - three times that of Monero. If it is delayed or fails to launch successfully, it could crash back to sub single-cent lows.

If you like living on the edge, this one is worth having a few bucks in, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
