Regarding the hardware wallets, you might point out that recently there had been issues reported. Some people bought the hardware ledger from platforms like ebay with keys that had been extracted beforehands and thus the seller did had access as well. So if you go for a hardware wallet, be very sure it is original and not had been prepared beforehands. Its the wrong way to save a few dollars...

This is a good point. If you are buying something to protect your finances, don't try to save $3. just buy it from a reputable source (Amazon or directly from the vendor).

Anybody know a way to use a USB as a hardware wallet? I have probably a dozen USB’s lying around and thinking of a way to use them.

You should be able to save any "desktop wallet" on a USB stick and then that usb would store the wallet and keys. However if you do this it does NOT offer you the same protections as a Nano or a Trezor. If you are investing enough money to worry about cold storage, i'd recommend that you just fork over the cash on a Trezor or a Nano.
