Why Feminism Needs Emma Watson's Boobs

in culture •  8 years ago

Apparently Emma Watson's boobs are in the news. (http://huff.to/2m3cJCP)

This fact really doesn't affect me as a happily married man. While Emma Watson is a great actress and is easy in the eyes, I really couldn't care less about what kind of pictures she is posing for. I have my own beautiful woman to look at.

But I do have an opinion about the response she is getting from other feminists. (https://mobile.twitter.com/JuliaHB1/status/836873834414366720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

If feminism wants to be taken seriously it needs to start acknowledging that women are in fact beautiful and there is nothing wrong with noticing it. Beauty and equality are not mutually exclusive. Beauty and intelligence are not mutually exclusive. Both can be part of what make women awesome.

Feminists have gone so far trying to tell us that women are more than just eye candy that they have removed a woman's ability to choose to accentuate and use her beauty. Just as it is wrong to tell women they must conform to cultural conceptions of beauty it is equally wrong to tell women they have to reject them outright. If Emma Watson wants to sell her image because it is marketable for her to do so, she should have every right to do so.

If feminism wants to be taken seriously it needs to acknowledge that people are beautiful. Part of what makes this world great is the beauty in it. Just as you shouldn't crush manners (https://driptorchpress.wordpress.com/2017/02/14/daddy-daughter-dates-are-anything-but-patriarchal/), you shouldn't be trying to suffocate beauty.

While we shouldn't reduce women to nothing more than their bodies, we also should not try to reduce them to nothing more than stale blandness either. We certainly shouldn't insist women become ugly in order to achieve equality with men.

Feminism needs Emma Watson's boobs because there is nothing wrong with being smart and beautiful. Until feminism acknowledges this fact no one is going to take it seriously.

Hey @driptorchpress -- I appreciate your article and agree with your perspective. I think you might get more up votes if you change the title! The title actually sounds like you're going to make the opposite point about feminism! I agree Boobs, Feminism, and Emma Watson can go together. Rock on. Thanks for writing this.

Emma Watson has a boy face, it creeps me out.

Who's that guy on the cover of Vanity Fair?
