Everything Is Biodegradable. Especially You

Meet your new burial plot:

qzmd8nzrdd.jpgsource

Yeah, I was tooling around on one of my favorite sites the other day.. us-funerals.com.. and learned that "Green Burials" are becoming all the rage.

It makes sense doesn't it? I mean people don't want to leave a large carbon footprint while they're living so why would they want to leave one when they die?

Those big caskets last for ages. Especially the metal ones. They have steel, stainless steel, copper, bronze...even gold plated!

The cost is insane

And the cost, good grief. 5 to $25, 000? Gold plated caskets are $40,000! And that's just the casket. In most places they place the casket in a concrete burial vault.

Then the grave marker or headstone, have you priced a nice one lately? lol. Don't die unless you're rich enough to pay for your funeral.

We're poisoning alot of ground

So you have the caskets and vault which last forever and on top of that you have the toxic chemicals. Formaldehyde is one of the main ingredients in embalming fluids.

That's some bad stuff. It's on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's list of the top 10 most hazardous chemicals for damaging the environment. Yikes.

Yeah it eventually leaks out, gets into the soil and can get down into water supplies. So Green burials use no embalming fluids.

You can see why Green burials are appealing

Thus, you have a growing movement for Green Burials and all for sound ecological reasons. I think every state in the country is doing this and I doubt if the United States is a leader in the Green movement is it?

So that means the whole world is doing it. Everything involved in the burial is biodegradable. Instead of a big, expensive, massive thing like this:

41yh7fDVlGL.jpg
source

You can have this basket casket(at a fraction of the cost):

image.png
source

Or this cozy wool casket:

image.png
source

Or even this cardboard box. This is the least expensive of course, with a price of $500!:

And your burial plot can look like this:

There ARE drawbacks

The bad thing is, there ain't no headstone to mark your final resting place. In fact, your final spot isn't known exactly but the funeral home gives your GPS coordinates. lol.

At each lot or field, there's a boulder and your name is engraved on there.

But family and relatives can't come and place flowers on your headstone and "talk to you" like they do in the movies.

So is it worth the environmental impact reduction to forego a place where you can be visited and memorialized?

Get 'em in the ground

Another thing to consider: with no preservatives or embalming fluids the bodies start to decompose pretty fast so the funeral has to be done in a couple of days.

That could make things difficult for family and friends in other parts of the country.

I'm SO interested in what you guys think! Let me know if you think this is the best, most natural way to go. From dust we came and to dust we return....or do we deserve more than that?

PS- I was reading this really fun article the other day where they picked one photo for each state in the Union that would best represent that state. You know, the state's general culture or what is thought to be stereotypical of that state.

It was so funny that I'm going to post a photo for a different state each day along with their state motto.

First up is Alabama. This one is so funny because I used this exact photo in one of my redneck posts about redneck innovations. lol.

Alabama's state motto is: “We Dare Defend Our Rights"

I guess this ol redneck defends his right to build a fishing boat from insulation and a lawn chair:

I think it sounds like a great idea as long as the family gets to view the burial! And of course the idea that the ground above would be covered with flowers and nature is also very appealing to me. The whole talking to someone’s grave is not something I’ve ever done. My Dad passed away in 1975 and I’ve only been back 1 time. I have 5 family members buried in that same cemetery and don’t even live in the same city, so I never go to their graves. My MIL who I loved dearly, like my own mama, passed in 2015 and I’ve been to her grave 2-3 times. I don’t feel closer to her when I’m there. We don’t live in the city where she is buried either.

Howdy violetmed! I agree. I've been to my parent's grave site one time. I've never really gotten the whole scenario of going and talking to a grave! It's interesting to go around and look at old cemeteries that are over 100 years old and they wouldn't be able to do that anymore a hundred years from now but times are changing for sure!

Yes, it is interesting to walk around those old cemeteries!

I agree, it's fascinating! If that makes us bizarre then so be it. lol.

Howdy minnowpowerup and thank you so much!

A very interesting article @janton I think the biodegradable option is great and I've always felt that the cost of coffins was exorbitant. I'm not one to visit grave stones myself and prefer to remember my loved ones who have passed away by viewing photo albums and meditating on the good times and special moments that I treasure in my heart.

Howdy tonight Trudee! I agree, I never visit graves because they ain't there. Your way is my way too!

Yes......we're on the same page here John. 😊

Heard of this new rage, now seeing it

Posted using Partiko Android

Howdy there clitadias! Are you saying that you are seeing that in your country also?

Hey@janton, I dont know for sure but the trend seems that way in India too

Posted using Partiko Android

Howdy today clitadias! That's interesting, with a country with such a dense population as India I can only imagine the amount of people who die each day. Where are you located?

Of Indian origin, but living in Dubai for many years now, more like home away from home.

Oh I see..you moved there because of your career? By the way, you have one of the best profile images on steemit. lol.

@janton, lol. Was a homemaker for many years before I decided to follow some of my own interests, photography and teaching children with special needs.

Howdy today clitadias! Oh, that is so admirable of a career! You must have a great deal of patience, good for you, we need more people like you!

@janton, thanks for your kind comments on my profile pic.😊

lol! Sorry about the sharp turn into alternative material coquiunlimited! I'm looking for a good story. Well, actually I found one but I haven't ordered the biography on him yet but you can read about him a few posts back about the slave turned marshall.

Hey how have you been? I think it was last week that jerrytsuseer was asking if anyone had heard from you.

It's definitely cremation for me!

Howdy deirdyweirdy! Well, that would solve everything wouldn't it? Not many people like the idea of cremation but it's very practical.

The green burials are interesting enough. It would be hard for your friends and loved ones to visit your grave, I suppose, but they could visit the general vicinity.

I've been thinking about this for awhile. I want to have my body submerged in plaster, then have a drill bored into it pass it through a furnace. Then have my ashes removed and cast it in bronze. Then put the ashes back in and cap it off. That way, I could be a perfect likeness statue, ash vessel, and tombstone all in one!

As for location, in the yard or garden would be a great spot. Even after I'm long forgotten, I could serve as garden art and a place for the birds to poop.

lol! Oh my gosh that is so creative and so funny! I wish I would have known that for my post, I would have given that as an alternative! lol. So you really sit around thinking of such things??

Nah. They usually come to me when I'm out for a walk or photographing things. :-)

Well going for a walk is a great time to get creative ideas for some reason, not sure why that is but it seems to work and I think that's when Steve Jobs did his best thinking.

Oh yes, absolutely! I love the beauty of cemeteries, no doubt, but I would love to become fertilizer for an apple tree and truly engage in the cycle of life.

Howdy sir wwwiebe! Well said, and you would save your family a ton of money too.

Hello Sir Janton...
Please don't invite me to a tour on your favorite sites hahahaha..
They are so not my favorite 😆
us-funerals.com 😆😆😆

lol! You don't like my taste in sites? lol..no that was the first time I'd ever been on one but you are the only person to catch that, or at least comment about it so good for you! How is it going there?

I think this is the best idea ever. The problem is there are not very many green burial sites in my area. The only one I am aware of is in the next county. They do allow monuments.

I bet it's a lot more difficult for the cold climates because the winter ground is frozen very hard and the beautiful green site would only be beautiful for a short time but it's still a good idea. People just wouldn't be coming to put flowers on your grave. It makes more sense for big cities burying so many people each day.

You are right about the ground being froze hard here for a lot of the year. If you need to know how deep the frost is at any given time, just ask the cemetery sexton. He will know!

I bet they have to have some powerful equipment to dig the graves in the dead of winter! I don't even know what they would use, do you? Guess I could google it. I never thought about it before.

George is the sexton of the cemetery in my hometown where my family members are buried. He is a marshal arts expert and takes great pride in the fact that he digs every grave by hand. In the winter he uses a pick to break through the frost. As he has gotten older his two daughters have stepped up and work beside their dad. Many people around the county call George to have him come out to the farm if a horse dies and the ground is frozen.

wow! that is amazing! I didn't know anyone dug them by hand anymore. And his daughters are working with him! That's amazing too! Ya'll have some amazing people up there. lol. How are you doing today?

That's a step in the right direction, the price and ecological footprint of those caskets and vaults are ridiculous. I favor cremation myself. Bury the ashes and plant a memorial tree - that's a lot more appealing to me than a headstone in a cemetery filled with strangers.

Howdy blueeyes8960! I hadn't thought of that but lenasveganliving just sent me this link: https://www.thelivingurn.com/pages/tree-zip-code

If I knew about that before I posted I'd included that option, very good, you guys are on the same page and I agree. Thanks so much for giving your opinion!

A cardboard box for a casket costs $500...??? 😳

All-in-all, this sounds like a good idea. The next-best-thing, I think is cremation, which takes care of the issue of planning a Memorial Service.

Your "photo of every state" project sounds interesting! Will have to try to remember to check in often! 😁

Howdy thekittygirl! I agree about the cremation option, that takes care of all the other problems, I know some people don't like the idea but I think it's fine and practical.
Yes, the price of a cardboard box made for a body is ridiculous! But we know anything connected to a funeral home is so I guess at least in the U.S. it makes sense even if it makes no sense! lol.

Howdy Janton! I am all for it! However, what do you think about Tree Urn?
https://www.thelivingurn.com/pages/tree-zip-code

I thought you might like the idea! oh, I wish I would've known about this urn and I would have included it as another alternative! Very interesting. But what if the tree died?

If the tree dies, that means the person is in hell............just kidding, lol.

oh that's bad! lol. I guess if it dies you put up a little plaque or something? I think so many people would love to do that urn method and it's dirt cheap. Well, I'm sure having someone cremated isn't cheap though.

You know what is cheapest? I have that.........I am donating my body to science, lol. Problem solved. I just have to find vegan priest to do take care of my soul.

Now that's one that I haven't thought about. Well what happens when they finish with your body? wow that sounds creepy!

Well they cremate it as well, what do you think? It doesn't mater anyway, it's just a body. The soul is long gone. lol.

Yes I agree, the spirit is long gone, that's why going to graves and talking to the person who died doesn't ever make sense to me.

I don't care what happen to me after I die. Actually, I would like the hospital to harvest for what is useful to them, and then get rid of the rest of the body they see appropriate - like pour sulfuric acid over it. 😁

lol! But what about having a place for your friends and family to come and honor your memory sir Vincent?

I don't want them to waste their time doing that. It's the thought that counts. It is good enough that they remember me in their memories, hearts and minds. The dead is gone. Life still has to go on for the living. Don't waste time doing something that is not doing anybody any good.

Dang! couldn't have said it better myself sir Vincent!

Howdy Jonboy! You agree with me? for once! 😊

Howdy sir Vincent! Yeah, you're right that IS kind of strange, I need to go back and re-read your comment! lol.

Interesting idea...although I am not surprised with it! The costs of funerals is ridiculous! Seems like a racket to me!

Yes sir, sir simms50, I'm not sure how they can justify the outrageous costs of funerals but this would illimate almost all the costs. But so would cremation. Do you know of any scriptures that speak against cremation?

Off top of my head I can't think of any verses, HOWEVER the ones that are in there don't speak very well of those whose bodies were burned up. I once was going to go the route of cremation, but after what I did find in the scriptures and with some prayer I have decided against it now.

Howdy today simms50! That's interesting, I've never known what to think of cremation in regards to scripture, thanks so much for your input!

Howdy Sir @janton, no problem here, as I will go the same way as the martyrs!
Into the flames.
Blessings!

sir papilloncharity! What does that mean, cremation?

Cremation it is Sir @janton.
I see no reason to spoil God's planet with my own importance.
My organs are donated to hopefully help some needy sick people and my spirit will fly free from it's bondage here.
I will join the angels flying around His throne and singing "Holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts"
Something to look forward to methinks.
Blessings!

oh yes, it makes our existence here sound pretty pitiful! lol. I couldn't agree more sir papilloncharity!

Cremation is cleaner and cheaper, but this looks a lot better than standard graves and caskets! I would just want a tag included with the body, so they didn't think it was a murder.

It would be a great place for a serial killer to dump bodies too....

>:(

oh! I never thought of that sir smithlabs but then I don't think like a criminal! lol. Good points. I agree that with cremation all of the problems are eliminated.

Yes, seems like a better option all around. Nothing less civilized than an open casket funeral!

>:(

well, it IS kinda barbaric isn't it?

I refuse to participate. I plan to remember them as they were, not as they lay.

:)>

I agree with that thinking but what do you do if people have open casket funerals? You don't go?

I don't go to the casket. My friend or loved one is not there anyway, they have gone....

:'(

As for myself, I favor cremation with or without a tombstone.
On the flip side I do visit my mother and father’s gravesite. My father was cremated and his ashes put there in a urn beside my mother.
Because it’s a small village and we know so many of the people (the Catholic and Protestant graveyards are connected,) it is an annual thing to visit them when my cousin comes. We check out our relatives. There is a lot of history on the tombstone.
My sister and I put a new saddle flower bouquet on top of my parents tombstone each summer when I visit Skiff Lake. My brother( 5 yrs. when passed) has a child’s tombstone beside them.
This may sound like a grieving hysterical mother but at my son’s gravesite (It’s in another place) I had a visitation from him there so the site means something to me.

Howdy redheadpei! How interesting. I can see how that place means so much and many people would want to have a permanent memorial to their loved ones to visit that's for sure. I think in a few years probably one third will be Green burials but there will always be the permanent memorials especially for rich and powerful and famous people.

thank you so much verifyme!

Lord Janton, this explains your sour mood all the time, talking about death. I guess when all you do is post historical wild west gun shootings then death is a natural part of it. But you at least kept it a bit fluffy in your own unique way so well done.

Would I go green on my funeral? Likely, but I wouldn't go for the card board box lol

Posted using Partiko Android

Haha! The cardboard box is a little too extreme? That's almost disrespectful isn't it?
Yes, sour and dour is my mood normally, I'm glad you picked up on that. I need a beer. Usually when there is a gunfight death occurs. I try not to glorify it but I don't make history up and much of it is very entertaining!

Haha yea it's a little on the "spit on your face" side lol! And $500 is a lot for a bit of cardboard!

Posted using Partiko Android

But I'm sure you can get the box in your size man, that has to be worth something! lol.

Maybe we can put your blog in that cardboard box as well lol

Posted using Partiko Android

Well that's pretty much where it belongs that's for sure! lol. As long as you do the memorial service. Hey speaking of dead meat, what's going on with your country, what's the deal with your new Prime Minister? Who has a name like Boris? Is he part Russian? And what's the deal with his hair? I know ya'll are in desperate need of leadership over there after what happened with your oil tanker.

Iran commits and act of war, pirating a ship by force and posting videos of it all over the world and there's England wringing their hands and saying "oh, that was rude, you shouldn't do things like that because something bad could happen!" lol.

Of course I will do the service. "Here lies Lord Fluffton, rowdy redneck who very rarely made any sense but somehow fumbled his way through"

#backboris mate, he's the saviour, some sort of test tube marriage with your commander by the looks of it with that hair!

You know me Lord Janton, I don't care much for "news" so have no idea what you're talking about (again). I'm just thinking of my next travel destination 😉

Posted using Partiko Android

lol! I love the eulogy sir nickyhavey. I'd rather be lucky than good anyday and my work shows it. lol.
Dang, it's a miracle you even know about the new Prime Minister! His hairstyle might become all the rage, you might want to consider copying that!

Pretty interesting @janton and I think it's a great idea. I already wrote out what I want when I die so my husband could follow my wishes without some people in his family deciding what they want over my wishes. He asked me to write it down even though I've made it known. No viewing or embalming. Just cremate me and sprinkle my ashes in the garden. I've pretty much always felt this way. Funny thing is..I've always liked visiting cemeteries and graveyards. It is so peaceful but I talk to loved ones that passed away almost daily from my home cause I know they aren't just hangin out by their gravesite.😉

Haha! howdy again deerjay! yes, the cemeteries are very interesting, at least the real old ones, so it would be too bad to stop doing graves completely but it would be nice to replace at third or even half the graves and I agree about the cremation I think, at least leaning that way. I also agree that the viewings are kinda barbaric.

I'm glad you enjoyed that one sir krazzytrukker! I don't know the song but you got some KILLER t-shirts! lol. What's that say on there, I can't read it backwards.

Hi janton, I know I am late commenting but I figure you will find it. Cremation is a good alternative to coffins and much better for the environment.

Howdy angiemitchell! That's okay, I'm late on everything. I agree, cremation solves all the problems.

I hope that funerals.com is one of your favorite sites for research only. LOL!
I think cremation is the best and to have a family member to keep the urn with the ashes. My mom and I were super close and I have only visited her grave site once. It was only her body (her shell) that was buried there. My mom (her soul) lives on in a better place, and I pray for her and talk to her all the time. No grave site needed for that. (I upvoted this post several days ago and I am just now commenting.)

Howdy Butterfly! I think everyone who has commented on this issue agrees with you that cremation is the best option and unless there's something I don't know about..it pretty much solves all the issues doesn't it?

The only drawback is not having a place to go and reflect and place memorial flowers or whatever. I'm so glad that you and your mom were close and even gladder that she is in Heaven! yay! lol. She's having a great time.
