Ladies, Here's 18 Rules To Make You A Good Wife

in culture •  5 years ago  (edited)

Oh my gosh, just typing that title makes me cringe! lol.

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I saw an article from Housekeeping Monthly published in May of 1955 and I about fell out of my chair. Part from shock and part from laughter. But mostly shock. My oh my have we changed as a society! In this instance, THANK GOD!

The family structure at the time

We have to remember that in 1955 the man was the income earner and the wife was expected to stay home, run the household and raise the kids.

And support the income earner at all costs or they could lose everything and miss out on the American Dream!

So women were trained to be good little servants. And this article gave them specific guidelines to follow in order to achieve the status of Good Wife.

Here we go with the Rules:

1. Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs.

image.png
source

2. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed.

image.png
source

3. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

image.png
source

4. Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your DUTIES is to provide it.

image.png
source

5. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper, etc. and then run a dust cloth over the tables.

image.png

6. Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

7. Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes.

image.png
source

8. Children are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.(lol. . good luck with that!)

9. Be happy to see him. Free him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him. Listen to him.

image.png
source

10. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first — remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

11. Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

12. Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquility where you husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

13. Don’t greet him with complaints and problems.

source

14. Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

15. Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

image.png
source

16. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

17. Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

18. And last but most importantly: A good wife always knows her place.

Ladies, if you follow all these rules religiously then YOU TOO could attain the title of Good Wife! IF your MASTER approves.

Holy Smokes! This is the most horrifying post I've ever done. lol. Even for 1955 it's hard to believe this was being pushed as the typical working class home structure.

I'm a child of the 50's and I guarantee you that our house was NOTHING like this! lol. My parents worked together and my dad treated mom with respect and honor.

Oh, I almost forgot, I'm adding number 19 just for the fun of it:

19. Always make sure the fridge is fully stocked, especially with the Master's favorite beers! There ya go. Now that's perfection and she's a darn good wife! lol.

Thanks for stopping by for this bit of insanity folks. If any of y'all was raised this way please comment about it. And let me know if you have a favorite from this list.

They're all outrageous but number 14 made me burst out laughing, like that would ever fly! Come on!

Of course this is an error. I think anyway. At the beginning of the post I stated what the list was from, the magazine and what month and year of issue.

If the text comes from an offline source and you retyped it, please specify that going forward. If it's from an online source that's reposting it, add the link with likewise specification. Otherwise there's no way to know the exact source or that it wasn't taken from somewhere online with no backlink.

I'll put up a Steemcleaners post with sourcing guidelines soon. There's been enough confusion over this type of questions.

Got it. Thanks for the instructions and clarification sir guiltyparties and also for the restoration of the post!

I hope this can be corrected @steemcleaners, it seems that the sources were accredited when I read @janton's post. 🙏

I have read through this several times and it appears to me that this post was sourced correctly. I hope @steemcleaners will be able to explain this downvote to all of us. @guiltyparties

Thanks Melinda. I'll check it out in a bit and respond accordingly.

I appreciate it! Thanks for the prompt response. ❤️

Seriously, you guys need to read articles properly before swinging by with your huge downvotes. Make you look like arses

Also, more seriously than you looking like an arse, it could result in people (less confident and established than @janton) leaving steem feeling abused and attacked . Please check more carefully before accusing people of plagerism.

Howdy reikigirl! Thanks for stopping by!

Would you sit in the time machine and travel back in time?

Good to see you sir oldtimer! Only if I had the power to change some things! Otherwise, no thanks, I enjoy our modern amenities too much!

This sounds like your typical magazine article: take some common sense run-of-the-mill stuff, and blow it way out of proportion, and then publish it. The kernel of truth in this applies to all relationships and for either gender, e.g. don't be a downer when your spouse walks in the door; make dinner plans if you know your spouse has had a long day; be sympathetic to whatever pressures your spouse is feeling. Basically, be thoughtful toward your spouse, whether man or wife.

But just saying "be thoughtful to your husband" would be very uninteresting to their readers, so I imagine they spiced it up...a lot. I'm with you on not being able to imagine that very many people actually lived this way. It sounds like the 50's version of a cosmo article titled "How to Spice Up Your Sex Life in Ten Easy Steps," or one of those weird Vogue articles outlining some "stylish" celebrity's house, to inspire us normal people by the intrigue of the freakishness of being an extremist. The pages might look glossy, but nobody carries these crazy ideas into their real life.

I will say that the "have food on the table when he gets home" thing was a real pressure. When I talk to my grandma on the phone at supper time she will keep asking me, "Is dinner done? I know your husband must be coming home soon." I always tell her not to worry about it. He is not expecting restaurant service, or service at all.

How did this turn into such a long comment? My comments are few and far between, but once you get me started I just don't stop typing.

Howdy ginnyannette! You made my week, I prompted a rare comment from the great one! lol. Thanks so much for taking the time, I know you're busy following your own list and that would make a great post. You know, to have a REAL house wive's list of practical ways to make things work in TODAY'S marriage. I would truly love that.

Sex was not on the list, not even mentioned, but that had to have been near the top even back then. I was real tempted to put in my own comments about it. lol.

That is so interesting about your Grandmother! God bless her. That's the first confirmation that at least part of the list was accurate. Well, I agree, and hope, that this was just an exaggerated article written to be an attention getter.

  ·  5 years ago (edited)

@ginnyannette, shouldn't you be...

Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed.

and

Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

No time for lengthy blog-comments.

Just kidding - Blame janton

One of the annoying things about my husband is that he grew up poor eating beans and rice, so he doesn't have a favorite meal. He likes everything. The man is a garbage disposal. "What do you want to eat on your birthday?" I always get: "I don't know."

Then we have the feet issue. The man is weird about his feet. No one gets near his feet. And he's a perfectionist, so my pillow fluffing would never meet the strict standards. If I spoke softly he'd say, "Did you lose your voice? Don't get too close, I don't want to catch the virus. "

It's not my fault I can't be a good wife. The man just doesn't know how to stick to proper 1950s standards. Sigh.

He sounds like someone I know...He must be a champ! 😊

I answer "I don't know" because if I say what I really want, she will disagree.

Lol. I don't think that is the case with my husband, but I suppose I can't be sure.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

AAAAHHHAAHAHAHAHAHAH!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Howdy sir wwwiebe! lol...I'm glad you liked this list. We've come a long way since then!

That's great, thank you for this post @janton - I showed it to my Missus and now I have to sleep in the living room 😉 lol

Hey @janton, here is a little bit of BEER from @johannpiber for you. Enjoy it!

It is hard to believe that peoples thinking was so... lacking, and still is if you listen to the new thoughts that emerged even hundreds of years ago and were to take a guess looking at an article like that can only indicate regression or stagnation. It is, however, a perfectly applicable article for some modern Dominant and Submissive relationships which would require rules of engagement such as these.

Howdy there penderis! I agree, it is very shocking to read and think that this was being pushed as the best way for a woman to live her life, in complete servitude. How are women treated in your country, generally speaking? Thanks so much for commenting!

Sorry it is quite long-winded but I don't think it is an easy question, you can skip to the end though for the uncertain conclusion

It depends, I think we have quite a big split in how woman are treated in our country. I don't see much of a difference in the suburban lifestyle. I think many are treated according to the role they assume, and the partner they choose. I guess I can't see any restrictions imposed on them apart from what they may be willing or even want. You can have a strong-willed and business-oriented farmers wife that rocks the auctions and yet willingly be more submissive to your husband who may be a brute with the IQ of a brick. I guess those are things I do not understand but I do see that which at the very least makes me she will be seen not as just a woman but a person.

Obviously not mentioning the typical trash mentalities and broken homes which all countries have. Overall I would say business is open to all woman and I for one do not treat female workers less horrible than the male ones.

Unfortunately, I will still see some businesses advertise certain positions only for a woman according to the old fashioned norms. All in all, I guess the usual bullshit to an extent it is pretty equal in the 20-35ish age range though. Urrgh so many nuances. Then you get the rural/underdeveloped areas and just plain cultural differences, mainly I feel those are less cultural and more environmental. The people have no respect woman and I think actively view them as even less than your article suggests.

To note that if you google South Africa now in relation to that you will most likely find most articles mention blacks and this is only because they are the majority. The fact is that people are so focused on race here that even when they fight for womans issues that race will be a factor on which they focus also. It is however in my opinion that it is mainly cultural and class-based. That is probably why I see a lot more equality in the middle class than the lower or upper classes but a strong adherence to the difference in dominance portrayed within more traditional families.

To not be much more long-winded, the way I see it is in the middle class each has mutually agreed to duties - a team, lower-class one party is dominant and the other is reliant which is an obvious problem if you consider average IQ and beliefs. Upper class, you have two dominant people in some cases but actually the same situation as the lower class where the people involved do not have the emotional intelligence to actually have someone be reliant on them without seeing them as property or lower than themselves. I think this then extends to how people do business and interact with others,

...but generally speaking, because those two classes are growing I think our country treat woman like shit.

Howdy again penderis! Thanks so much for articulately breaking down a complex issue in understandable terms, this is a marvelous answer.

I'm sorry to hear about the treatment of women as being generally unfair but hopefully that will improve with the younger generation like you mentioned. I think the same is true here as far as the most equality is in the youth.Thank you again for spending the time to give such a thoughtful response!

You have to admit, although this is unreasonable for a wife to do, it does sound pretty nice. The problem is that there in no give and take between the husband and wife. They both want a peaceful and comfortable home, but both need to work together to accomplish this. And the husband is accountable for his time and should not come home unexpectedly, or go out without his wife after being gone all day, that's trouble.

Posted using Partiko Android

Howdy sir ironshield! Exactly, it takes tons of sacrifice and work from both of them to achieve peace and a comfortable home. But in this list the husband is accountable for nothing, not even staying out all night! lol. That sounds wildly unrealistic even back then but maybe I'm just hoping it was.

Hey @janton, here is a little bit of BEER from @johannpiber for you. Enjoy it!

Thank you sir beerlover, I can always use a beer!

I dunno though, the ladies in those pictures look pretty happy.:) Perhaps there were also 18 rules to make you a good husband!

lol..oh I would love to see those rules! I bet there wasn't one and if there was it was probably about how to control your wife!

Was number eight added just to make women of the time feel as if they couldn ever be "good wives?" Lol... He wants to see the children play. Oh, but they can't make noise when they do it. So... It's great for when your children are playing mime, right?

I wonder what that little handbook, if you could find one in good condition, would sell for at auction today. I also wonder how many of them were torn in half or chucked into the fireplaces.

lol...great point about the children sir fotosdenada. This list is so whacked I think it's hilarious and infuriating at the same time! I have to believe that even for 1955 it was too sexist but maybe I'm not being realistic.

THat's when Jonboy decided to get a robot. 😊

lol! That's hilarious sir Vincent! Getting a robot would be the only way to get this list fulfilled? lol. maybe that's why sex wasn't on the list, because only a robot these days would do the list.

Howdy Jonboy, I am sure they are developing one as we talk - a robot that provides sex, that is. 😉

Very true, I've heard that too. I kind of didn't want to think about that. lol.

Howdy esteemapp! Thanks so much for the upvote!

I think I had the same reaction when I read your title like “what in the heck is thinking??”

Then I read it and laughed even more because sex wasn’t number 1. Then I got an even bigger laugh because it wasn’t mentioned at all—they didn’t know anything back then!

#satire <— for anyone (specifically ladies) who wanna bite my head off.

lol! oh I think everyone will agree with you sir dandays, sex was not even on the list. I was very tempted to put in my own comments about sex but figured I was already on an inflammatory subject so I better not. lol.

I think the divorce rate was real low though but probably because most of the wives were "trained"to be doormats. Or slaves.

Eish! (African term for Gosh) I don't wanna say too much here in this modern day Sir @janton. This is most dangeroos (local for dangerous) territory.
Blessings!

Hey it's okay, this is just a history piece. lol. Look how far we have advanced in the area of equality. Dangeroos..lol...yes if this was suggested today it would be downright deadly to the presenter!

Well let's hope that you get more than a thousand comments here, as you have definitely tried to throw a stone into a bush.
Blessings!

It's a fine line between controversy and just sparking interest. I've been burned by accidentally stepping into controversy a few times!

Hahaha, I think that I saw that Sir @janton
I rather post about things that i am sure about.
People are so different and many a soul with good intentions created unexpected pitfalls for themselves.
Such is life!

Very true and wise as always sir papilloncharity. This time I got lucky and just caught some people's curiosity without making enemies!

Enemies can be a curse, but they can also be a hidden blessing Sir @janton.
If an enemy chirps you grief, it encourages your loyal friends to stand up for you which in turn draws the loyal ones closer to you.
Blessings!

That's very true. Well in the case of this post it got wiped out because Steemcleaner's said I was plagariazing by copying that list, even though I gave the name of the magazine, the date and the month of issue. It was over $4 and that got wiped out too. So now the post is greyed out.

lol, might see if i can get this happening again. wish me luck :)

Howdy michealb! It might take more than luck but I wish you success. And safety!

lol, i gave her the list and said she didn't have to do all of them straight away :)

still alive.... for now

_

lol! Yay you made it through. She was joking right?

This is how our parents were - I am obviously a very bad wife hahaaha, but I must say the thing I miss most about the good old days is respect - not only for others, but for nature and one self. Thank you for the post and making me laugh with a few eye rolls.

Howdy anneke! Good to meet you. Yes, I hope you would not be able to fulfill this list! lol. I agree about those good old days because while this aspect was ridiculous, the time period was a much more innocent and wholesome one and I was reminded of that when I was looking for photos and old ads from the 50's, that part was fun. lol. Thanks so much for reading and for the resteem!

OMG! Face palm!!

lol! Howdy roselifecoach! I agree!

Mornin’ Cowboy! Whoever wrote that in 1955 is quite the comedian. Number 14 and 18 really irked me. 😂

lol! Howdy redheadpei! I know, I am hoping that this was way exaggerated to get attention but maybe I'm being naive. Numbers 14 and 18 are extremely outrageous, that would never fly. I don't think that would ever fly back then even. I think the author was a real dirtbag sexist and hoping he could do some influencing.

It is logical that women who are stay at home wives would have a decent meal and a clean home for their husband to come home too after a day’s work. Or vice versa if the husband is the stay at home partner.

In those days, when the article was written, not many women worked outside the home.

Howdy redheadpei! yes, good points. Some of the list is logical and practical.. like it makes sense to have dinner about the time he got home. But the attitude of the rest is insane! I'm sure couples were more realistic than that.

It’s a wonder the writer didn’t say the wife should gladly submit to a beating by her spouse. It wasn’t until 1920 that wife beating was illegal in all States.

I saw a survey where one out of three women have been abused or forced into sex by someone they know.

Physical violence is only one part of domestic abuse: abusers often use other means like isolation, threats to family members and pets, controlling of personal finances and psychological abuse to hurt their victims.

I’ll stop as I’m going off into a rant. I know men have been subjected to the same violence.

Yes men have had the same treatment but very rarely. Yes I know, I'm all too familiar with dozens of forms of abuse. That is such an interesting statistic you stated though, about it not being illegal to beat your wife until 1920! Wow. That tells you how backward and primitive we were back then!

Still laughing my arse off.... Product of the 1950's I do not recall this lifestyle one iota with my mother nor grandmother.

Perhaps an American Dream with a handful of extremely rich housewives on this side following after reading imported magazines, definitely not found in the average home.

Pipe dreams conjured up by men.... All is equal in love and war.

Howdy joanstewart! I hope you are right, I hope this was not really the way it was, it sure wasn't in our family. I think the author was trying to influence wives after his own twisted sense of superiority. It's a demonstration of how far we've come though. A magazine printing even a watered down list today would be out of business tomorrow. lol. Pipe dreams, that's a good one, I like that! Thanks so much for the great comment!

My mom went back into bookkeeping position when I was about 5 years old with two older brothers, a younger sister. We had chores and homework to do before joining up with friends to roam till parents got home at the end of the day. Early years we never had a telephone, so yes, different life, different times.

I never witnessed a life as mentioned in this magazine, have seen similar and always chuckled thinking how audacious and stupid the whole concept was.

How interesting joanstewart, so you were working and learning responsibility at a very young age and it was normal for back then. That is excellent. Oh yes, this list is so stupid it's hilarious!

Being a family, everyone pulled their weight from a young age, and no pocket money or bribery offered either.

Actually mom never cooked, dad was the chef I learned from him. Mom mainly sewed all our clothing, linen, curtains, whatever was required in the home, each to their own.

Wow that is very interesting and cool joanstewart! Your dad did all the cooking and everyone worked together and the kids got no allowance for their work which in today's society would almost be considered child abuse!

Ha ha - no bribery and corruption, chores were the accepted way of life, each had their own to do and were answerable at the end of the day. Many hands make light work....

Yes, I was raised on the farm the same way. I don't think many are raised that way anymore, at least not over here.

Oh Lordy!
When I read the title... I was like... WTH!
But then... it settled down- almost 65 years ago this is what was considered... acceptable.

Howdy goldendawne! I agree, I think it's a good demonstration of how far we've come from those days of women being nothing but servants! I was shocked because I didn't know it was that bad. I guess it was worse than servitude, it was urging wives to be slaves! But I did have fun looking at ads and photos from the 50's. lol. In many ways it was such an innocent time. Thanks so much for commenting!

And that's how we got the Stratford Wifes. Women should be thankful technology was not that developed back then :)
I'm going to show this to my wife; she has been complainign about these times. She wants to go back to a time where life was prosperous, women wore pretty dresses, and appliances were cheap, something like the 50s. As soon as I'm done doing the dishes, I'll send her the link.

Haha! Howdy sir hlezama! Well, certain aspects of the 50's were wonderful because in many ways it was such an innocent and more wholesome time period. I'd love to see her reaction to this list though! lol.

LOL

Haha, if you think this one is bad you should study the original marketing for Listerine.

As a douche and birth control. :) look it up.

lol, this was fun!

Howdy whatsup! oh my gosh, your Listerine story is even more nightmarish. Thanks, I'm going to look it up as suggested!

I had a home economics teacher in the late 60s who use theose same images in class. The one that she had of a woman in a dress leaning over to scrub the toilet bowl made me burst out laughing and say 'oh yeah, I'll be wearing my pearls when I clean the toilet' . She kicked me out of class. Good thing I didn't need the credit, because I decided home ec wasn't for me and I never went back. Poor Mrs. Curtis. The world was rapidly changing around her!

lol! Oh man, that's a great story! She was so stuck in the 50's. Wow. I wonder if she ever changed with the times?

Thank you sirbearbear!

At least these rewards are not removed ;)

Yay! Thank you sirbearbear.

Good plan putting the disclaimer line at the top...

My favourites:

Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first — remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

I'd not dare let my wife know I used the word favourites in respect of anything in this blog...Far too dangerous. Lol.

Good blog.

P.s. @ginnyannette, you'd do all of these things as a matter of course right? :)

Lol! I told her that she should put out her own, modern housewife list and I hope she does!

I love those favourites too, lol..it's total insanity today but those guys had it made back then if wives actually followed even part of the list.

I thought it was interesting that there was no mention of sex but then this was 1955 when no such talk was acceptable in a publication. I almost put in my own comments but some women might think I was serious!

Thanks so much for commenting sir galenkp, @krazzytrukker has been uncharacteristically silent on this one for some reason!

Oh shoot, I just saw that the post was totally wiped out, I was over $4 in earnings and now it's zero and greyed out! I must have gotten carpet bombed with downvotes. Really? This was a history piece, an interesting look at the culture of the 50's. jeez.

Looks like threespeak and steemcleaners downvoted. Not sure why.

Well they say that I plagarized by copy and pasting that list even though I stated the magazine, the month and the date. I don't see how it's a big deal since I gave credit and the magazine is not in existence anymore since this is pretty old stuff from 1955. lol.

Yeah, I figured that. I guess if they let it go everyone would do the same and the "content" would be a bit dull.

If I ever do something like that [which is rare] I paraphrase the text into my own words and put the link to the actual text - Makes it my work, but based upon someone else's.

Something to think about I guess. I've actually read it before but got the same chuckle out of it in your blog.

You know what's up with @krazzytrukker?

  ·  5 years ago (edited)

That's a great idea sir galenkp, that's what I'll do next time I want to give a list that I read.

Hey, did they push this type of servitude for wives down you way in the past?

No, he usually contacts me after a day or so but it's been a few days I think.

Yeah, Aus generally follows on from the States so it was the same here in the 50's. Aussie women don't take too much shit though so the blokes tow the line a little better. We know what's good for us.

lol..yes sir, we sure do! Most women now days are so strong-willed that they'd just as soon kill you as serve you!

Krazzy is Trukkin....

Good job sir krazzytrukker, you keep your nose to the grindstone and in a couple months you can cut back. What would we do without you guys? EVERYTHING we got comes by truck.

howdy steemitbloggers! Thank you so much and God bless you!

Kill me please if I ever stuck in that era!!!!😊

lol! That would be terrible wouldn't it joelai?? They wanted women to be literal slaves, at least that article was advocating for that!

Hey there cowboy. How's it going? Was this ever followed back then in the 1950's? Also the smiles in the pictures seems uncanny. Don't complain and greet with problems lol.

Howdy sir watersnake101! I think many marriages were similar but I doubt if many were close to fulfilling this list, thank goodness! Even back then I don't think many reached that level of sexism with the wives so subserviant.

I think most couples worked together but had their distinct roles and the husbands usually had total control of the income making and financial decisions. I wouldn't try to get a single one of these today in my marriage! lol. Thanks so much for commenting!

Yes, I have seen a similar article and had a real good laugh! -things have changed thank heavens yet I think some men would love to be treated in that manner!!

Howdy lizziesworld! Oh yes, some men would dearly love that treatment and have their wives act more like slaves than partners. So true. I hope this post gave you a laugh also and thanks so much for commenting!

My pleasure

The TV shows from that era back up these sentiments actually. Look at Leave It To Beaver, a show that even young people today are likely familiar with due to this show's reruns being shown just about everywhere for so many years.

I remember that as a kid, I thought the Cleaver sons had an envious home life. Ward, the dad, is nice and never gets mean and nasty in punishing them, and I always would wish I had a dad like that, lol. As an adult though, I see how silly it was to think that families like the Cleavers actually existed.

Now, I think it's worse, as the shows based on families and their activities always center on the things we do occasionally that make us look bad, and the shows train us to think, "We're all a bunch of hopeless saps with nothing positive going on at all, so we might as well accept it."

Howdy sir free-reign! Yes, you are so right, I thought of that show when I was looking for photos from the 50's to fit it. It was an ideal home situation wasn't it? And like you said, today's shows are totally, dysfunctional messes.

A good reason not to watch much tv!

I was waiting for the part where the wife was to be submissive and give it to him in all the styles he demands :/ bleh!

Howdy elsiekjay! Good to meet you. Yes, I was surprised that sex was never mentioned but then I realized that in 1955 such a topic was forbidden in such a publication. Otherwise it would have been even more nightmarish I'm sure! Thanks so much for commenting!

😂😂😂 I was amused. Thank you!

Howdy iamraincrystal! I'm so glad it was good entertainment for you, thanks so much for commenting!

I'm speechless

lol! That takes something to make sir wales speechless! Thank you sir and I agree, it's insanity. I'm guessing that even for 1955 it was too sexist but maybe that's just me being naive. Thanks so much for commenting!

Oh-my-word!!!!!! lol this is too funny, although all I can envision is the Leave it to Beaver show :) Remember that one? I remember my mother in law telling me about always having the children bathed and in pj's before dad came home...she totally fit the "Good Wife" My home certainly wasn't like this either @janton. Things have definitely changed I would say, fun post

Howdy birdsinparadise! I thought it was hilarious too but almost didn't post it because it's so sexist. Yes, I remember Leave it to Beaver and I thought about it when looking for 50's images to show. The man always had a suit and tie on and the wive always had a nice dress. lol.

I think even for 1955 marriages weren't really operating like this list suggests right? Or am I being naive? Maybe a few of the things like you mentioned with the kids and maybe having dinner ready. Thanks so much for your great comment!

Hello @janton,

Good article. Let's do an imaginative exercise. How would the perfect wife be in 50 years in the future?

Howdy sir janaveda! Good to meet you. Oh wow, I just hope there ARE wives in 50 years! That is a great question though. I'm sure you wouldn't find any sign of a wife being submissive do you? I think it would be totally equal or the wife would be running things!

My father must have read this! We FIVE children were expected to be quiet when he returned home (easy to do since we were scared shitless of him), a martini was ready, and dinner always came off on time. My mother was well turned out when he got home, never complained (or so I thought - I learned after they were both gone that she threatened to leave him often), and that guy never lifted a finger to help her. Have I mentioned there were FIVE KIDS in this house? Make that six - he was the most difficult child of them all.
I think this list explains a lot!
Love your little additions.

I was SO tempted to add additions about sex since the list didn't mention that! But I was afraid of already being close to offending people.

Wow so your mother was a darn good wife! Even though it sounds like she wasn't happy at all. I think alot of wives must have felt trapped and with few if any options. That is so interesting about your family structure, why were you scared of your father, was he mean to you kids?

He was a product of those times, born of two Greek immigrants in a small town in Appalachia. Just after WWII with tripe like this all over mainstream media, impossible expectations of everyone, man woman and child. He had a booming voice and was quick to anger, a powerful local leader, and a demanding father. Yeah, I tended toward invisibility if he was around.
I remember one argument of my parents' very clearly, when she wanted to go back to teaching once her youngest was 8 years old. He said "No wife of mine is going to get a job." She did it anyway. That may have been one of the times she threatened to vamoose.

Oh how interesting owasco..I would be so scarce if he was around too. Your mom went ahead and got the teaching job. I bet he was thankful, at least eventually, for the additional income. She was gutsy!

She could skip all but number 19 and she would be a "Good Wife", haha ;)

Wow that is one funny list, lol. I think it was written by a man!

Number 10 just blows my mind "remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours", hahaha, lol.

Oh man, that is a killer! Like her thoughts or concerns are nothing. wow. It's unreal. I think this was too much even for the times. I know in our house none of this list would be tolerated! thanks so much for commenting sir hhayweaver!

I think I remember reading a list like this in the 60's @janton, 1860 🤣🤣🤣

lol! That sounds about right sir wonderwop. lol..good one sir.

LOL this is so funny! !tip .2

Howdy lizelle! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. They never tried to push this kind of thing down in your neck of the woods did they?

🎁 Hi @janton! You have received 0.2 STEEM tip from @lizelle!

@lizelle wrote lately about: Wednesday Walk & Make Me Smile Challenge - Catching Rain & Sunflowers Feel free to follow @lizelle if you like it :)

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide.

Howdy there tipu and many thanks to you and @lizelle!

An example of how easy it is to get on the bad list. I think you must insist to prove that you have been wrongly cataloged.

Well Melinda asked them about it and they said they would get back to her (and I suppose me) when they have looked at the situation. But yes, that came as a shock! lol.

Yes, it is.

In my country Malaysia, in some parts and cultures, these are still normal and expected of. Even to this day. My sister and mother still thinking we should behave like some of the articles suggest, especially if you're a full-time housewife and not working or have a source of income. I remember reading teen magazines translated to the local language and there's article sounds similar to this one. I think it's a brainwashed idea for a female to be extremely submissive/doormat and feel unworthy. Also, its design for working-class people so they'll be in order at home and less chaos. If the home is not in order, and lead to a high divorce rate, it will affect the workers and productivity at work. The company sure doesn't want this, hence the ridiculous article and brainwashed like this one. Thank you for sharing this article. It's sure poking the beehives. Haha!

Howdy sir cryptokannon! Thanks so much for sharing about the situation in your country, that is very interesting and I can see why this type of list would be pushed, even though it is outrageous in our country today.

I don't think their brainwashing attempts will work in most places. Thank goodness. Thanks so much for commenting!

The only wife I've ever seen fulfill this role to a tee is Mrs. Cleaver.

That's right sir blockurator, lol.. I used to watch that show. Man would that seem like the corniest show in the world today. Yes sir, Mrs. Cleaver was a dang good wife!

Haha! Classic sir blockurator, thank you for this clip! I like the way she's trying to change Beaver's concept of girls.

This is an amazing post for historic perspective, @janton!

Howdy jayna! I agree, it shows how far we've come! I don't know how close we are to actual equality though, do you? Do you know of restrictions on women where you work?

This reminds me of the movie "stepford wives". Downright weird, but hey it was the 50s.

Howdy sir pinoy.viajero! I agree, it sounds totally bizarre in this day and age. Are the women there treated fairly equally?

Absolutely yes. Also, in the olden days, some societies are matriarchal. I believe there are still families in my country that are ruled by the matriarchs. 😊

Very good sir pinoy.viajero. Yes, that makes sense, thank you!

Howdy Janton! Looks like they came to their senses so the article is visible!

Oh my gosh!!! I have to send this to my daughter, lol. I was born in 1963 in Communism and my mom was making a lot more money than my father, lol. Besides, my grandmother was cooking and doing lots of house work, but she did not let anyone to push her around neither. I am not from a family of submissive women for sure, so this is totally unreal even for 1955!!! I used to watch I Love Lucy and I am still a big fan.............well, she was nothing like this including Ethel, lol. They were two troublemakers, far from "good wives" 😂😂😂

So none of the women in your family were good wives then! lol..no they were the best wives because this is retarded. But I chose to believe that even in 1955 sexism in real life was not that severe. I hope not anyway.

I love strong-willed women that don't take crap from men so I would have loved your mother and grandmother!

I agree Janton, it wasn't quite so extreme in reality. And most men liked my mother and my grandmother, except my father. He left, lol.

Oh man, you father didn't like your mother being so strong?

Yeah, well my parents were not a good match. For some reason he had good marriage with his second wife. I met her and she seemed to be quite strong as well. She was journalist and very intelligent, but I think she was better suited for my father.

Oh ok well sometimes things just don't work out. Back in the old days it was terrible if you had a bad marriage because you were stuck for life!

Hey @janton, here is a little bit of BEER from @johannpiber for you. Enjoy it!

Howdy on this fine Saturday morning sir beerlover!

Hey I was going to tag you in this @contrabourdon LOL

This was definitely the boomer generation.

Yes exactly sir abitcoinskeptic. For most of us it was our parents or grandparents and even then I don't think that list would be realistic! It's entertaining though.

I can see China but I wouldn't have thought Russia. Wow, makes me feel sorry for those women.

Hey janton, all I can say is thank goodness times have changed. I would never have made a dutiful wife, lol.

Thank goodness you wouldn't have measured up to this list! lol. I'm so glad we're beyond treating women like inferiors!

My husband expects life that way. I keep telling him he should have married a mute from a different country. Or better yet, I'm going to hit him with divorce papers as soon as I can afford to buy a home for me and the kids. Good job he is not on steem 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Howdy paulag! No way! Are you serious or just teasing? I can't tell. lol.

Oh! Ok then, I am really sorry to hear that. I mean not that you will buy a new home! You have alot of confidence in Steem and Steemit?

Fun reading through this one😃😊

Hey there clitadias! Did any of those sound familiar or was it all just a big joke? Women are expected to be subservient in too many countries.

This is a hoot. Both the post and the comments. We really have come far in such a short period of time.

Howdy tryskele! Good to see you! Do you know anyone who acted like a wife on that list? I sure don't.
