Cherry blossoms: A unique symbol of Japan! (10 beautiful images)

Those of us who are used to watching Japanese animes, especially since childhood – the time when we were pure hearted and amazed by every detail, probably couldn’t escape the captivate images of beautiful Japanese cherry blossoms.

Regardless of the nature of the anime nor the time in which the events are set, there is always at least one scene with such a tree and the flowers shaking under the wind, producing a nostalgic mood that somehow brings up memories.

In fact, I was so amazed by them that when I remember emotional scenes from my childhood, the blossoms manage to somehow get entangled between them.

For example, when I remember my big sister returning from school, siting in the hall of our small apartment, laying out the big book of old fairy tales, and reading to me, I have the feeling that pink flowers felt ceaselessly from the ceiling.

But, what makes them so special?

The Japanese term for the cherry blossoms is “sakura”. These pinky-white flowers bloom across Japan in different times, usually between March and May, but the first one’s show as early as January in regions like Okinawa. In Tokyo, they are to be found at the beginning of April.

They are so important in Japanese culture, that a special event is centralized around them. “Hanami”, also known as “cherry blossoms festival” are annual celebration in which people organize picnics under the sakuras. Food, drinks, songs, companionship, all surrounded by cherry blossoms! It sounds like fun to me.

But there is something much deeper, metaphorical, that strikes me when I think about the Japanese cherry blossoms. They are associated with the transient nature of time. They last only a short period of time, as if using they magic to make us remember the passage of time, the fading memoires of our lives. And as days go by, some part of us go away with them.

Sometimes, I tend to think of my life as a short picnic under a sakura.

So, let us remember the special moments of our lives, our first loves, family, friendships, the things that got away from us, while enjoying these astonishing pictures of cherry blossoms.
