Christmas traditions of Czech Republic: crispy fried carp with potato salad

in culture •  5 years ago

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

After introducing you to one of the most popular Czech Christmas traditions in my yesterday´s post about predicting future from apple, I am going to dedicate my today´s post to another tradition that most Czech people observe at Christmas.

This time around, we will take a closer look at what we eat for the Christmas dinner. In spite of some new modern trends, I think it is safe to say that some 90% of Czech families still eat the same, traditional meal on the Christmas Eve and that is the crispy fried carp with potato salad.

Since the Czech Republic is a landlocked country with the closest sea being hundreds of miles away, we are not used to eating sea food and even though we have quite a lot of rivers, lakes and ponds in the country, fish is eaten much less than chicken, pork or beef throughout the year.

However, on the Christmas Eve, you can smell the distinctive scent of the carp being fried in almost every Czech household as that´s what we have been eating at Christmas for centuries (since at least the 17th century, to be precise) and we still love it! :)

As for the potato salad, the recipe can differ slightly with individual families and regions but it generally includes these ingredients: boiled potatoes (peeled after boiling), hard boiled eggs, mayonnaise, chopped raw onion and a mixture of pickled vegetables.

Since we are currently based on the Azore Islands, a remote Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean where, for obvious reasons, carps are pretty hard to get, we used some other fish species for the dinner but it was delicious too and it even looked the same on the plate so the two photos featured above (I know they are terrible but as I have mentioned here on my blog my times already, I really suck at food photography) are a good illustration of what was served on most Czech tables on the Christmas Eve ;)

How about you my fellow Steemians? What is the traditional Christmas meal in your countries? I know it´s been very quiet here on the blockchain these days but I would really like to get some feedback from you as I am always eager to learn more about how people live in other parts of the world.

Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas everyone!

Interesting to know that Czechs are into fish for Christmas considering Czech Republic is an inland country with no sea exit. In Romania pork is king for Christmas :) Your dinner looks fantastic to me! Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Nice, I didn´t know that pork is the traditional Christmas meal in Romania :) Now I know! Thank you for sharing a bit of your culture with us ;)

Merry Christmas to you and your family my friend!

Oh man. You have me missing that hearty Czech food! I remember getting served an almost two kilo sized pork knuckle all for me when I was in Prague last year! Yum!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Tammy!

Hahaha, not the healthiest cuisine out there but surely one of the most delicious (at least for us :D)

Thanks for stopping by man, Happy New Year to you and Gaby too! Have safe and enjoyable travels guys.

Thanks buddy!

Ah man that looks delicious! Hope you had a nice Christmas!

For me, roast turkey, potatoes and vegetables with stuffing, pigs in blankets and gravy... That's my Xmas dinner right there, drooling on my phone as I write this 😋

Thank you very much for sharing your Christmas menu with us :) I can see you live in London so it´s not surprising that your menu is very similar to that of @adetorrent described above :)

Happy Boxing Day mate!

Haha yea I think it would be hard to find anyone saying anything too much different for their Christmas meal in the UK 😁

Thanks man, hope you have a nice break this week too!

Yup. Unless you opt for the kebab shop I guess haha.

Haha true! That's in case of emergency I feel! Particularly if a Christmas Eve piss up has gone awry 😁

Very interesting tradition! In my adopted country, Canada, obviously everyone likes to eat turkey. It's dry, it's boring and the cranberry sauce makes it worse. Our family tends to have a lamb or beef roast instead. Never heard of carp before, but it looks mouth-watering delicious.

Turkey with cranberry sauce? Wow. I cannot even imagine what it tastes like :D But it sounds good to me. Thanks for your contribution man, much appreciated :)

"Pigs in blanket" :) [small sausages wrapped in bacon]. Sometimes roasted Turkey.
That looks delicious though.

Just googled those out. Looks super tasty. Is that a main dish? And what did you have? :) Thanks for your feedback man ;)

It's part of the main dish, or a side-dish. It's usually accompanied by other stuff like a stuffed bird (usually turkey) potatoes, sprouts, carrots and peas. It's pretty nice actually. I know England isn't known for great food, but the Christmas dinner is a knockout haha.

Me, I had roasted turkey with potatoes, carrots and peas. I also had deep-fried "mozzarella sticks" on the side. Good times

That´s right, the English cuisine in general doesn´t have the best reputation (quite the opposite I am afraid :D) but your Christmas meals sound like a feast :)

Thanks for sharing all that with us, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping to get with this post.

Happy Boxing Day bro! (I cannot help but smile every time I see or hear this name :D)

Hehehe. Thanks. It's the perfect Boxing Day here. It's raining and dark. No temptation to step out of the house :)

Ani letos nechyběl na našem stolu jako tradiční české vánoční jídlo. O jeho původu jsem nevěděl, díky za informace. :-)

No my taky, měli jsme cosi z Kapverdských ostrovů :D Ale bylo to dobré a na fotce to vypadalo jako smažený kapr, tak jsem to použil i sem do článku :D

@tipu curate (it's not easy to find out posts without someone else already commented this 😜)

The food looks so simple and delicious, and very different compared to our Christmas table which is a spread of all types of meat!

Thank you :) Well, the traditional Christmas table is also very rich, diverse and festive in the Czech Republic but I am not there right now so I had to improvize a bit. Also, I showed just the main dish in this post ;)

Thanks for trying to get me the TipU curation but only nominated curators can use this service. I would love to nominate you too but unfortunately, the nominations are suspended now...

Oh, I see, I didn't know about the nomination part. Sorry about that.

And that's a pretty impressive Christmas food preparation 👍🏼
