Have you ever heard “Moo Dang”, Korean Shaman.

in culture •  8 years ago

They called Korean Shaman "Moo Dang". The origin of Moo Dang is uncertain.
But we suppode that it came from the prehistory age. At that time, religion and political powers were not devided. So Moo Dang had had not only religious but also political leader for long time.

Nowdays Moo Dang’s roles are limited only in the primitive religion, fortune teller and playing special ceremony to prevent evil spirits, etc.

These photos are Moo Dang playing ceremony

I took a photo of Moo Dang, When I had traveled 2 months ago.
It seemed that Moo Dang having a ceremony to receive spiritual power from somewhere.I posted about that

On the business trip, I could’ve taken some photos of Moo Dang’s houses.
At first, their house seems same, but there are big differences among their houses.
I heard that there were strict classifications of hierarchy.

The lowest Moo Dang’s house has only red and white flag

There are Korean national flag and red and white flag in Middle class house.

The highest and strongest house can use the symbol of Buddha.
It looks like hagen cross of NAZI, but quite different from that.
At first colour is red, and the end of symbol goes to opposite direction.

This house can use dried bamboo pole.

In korean Buddhist temple, there are such places to serve the traditional spiritual existence, for example mountain god.

Buddhist temple prepared special place for traditional religion to appease their opposition.

That’s why Moo Dang have been using Buddhist Flag.

I found strange thing. The house of Moo Dang , who has highest spiritual level, looked being almost collapsed.

I heard that the more stronger spiritual power Moo Dang has, the more difficult their live is.

Does your place have this kinds of primitive religion yet ?

You can say superstitious, but it is not enough to say just superstitious.

a very interesting post today, @slowwalker

I know a little about Shamans because our native North American indigenous people practice their own forms of ritualistic worship closely related to Nature - so worshipping the mountain god would be similar.

I understand that some of these shrines in Korea have fallen into ruin but lately many are being rebuilt.

You are very respectful of others' beliefs - I admire that.

BTW, I wasn't aware that there were different classes of houses displaying flags and symbols and that the Buddhist symbol was the highest!

Very fascinating, my friend :)

Thank you so much for reading

you're very welcome, @slowwalker

Super photos and nice educational and interesting post, thanks :)

🤗Thank you

Wow that`s extremely out of my realm. Thank you for showing us that fascinating world, in my reality people have fancier cars not different flags lol, pretty mind blowing!

lol

Thank you so much

Thank you for making me realize I know so little about Asian culture. I knew something about Japan but there are just fascinating traditions all over the place. For Romania I won't say there are many things left when I think of superstitions and traditions. At least, not with such a big impact. Being for the last 2000 years at the intersection of multiple cultures and religions made us loose the ones we previously had. So it's even more amazing to find out the diversity we have in the world.

Thank you for your comment

very cool outfits

Thank you so much

very nice

Thank you

its kind of sad that we must imply that the flag has nothing to do with nazi ideas, instead of realizing how wrong hitler's idea of equality was lol

😂

Thanks for sharing this @slowwalker
The culture of a people should always be appreciated. It is what keeps them going.

always appreciate your work and ... following you!
please do stay in touch.

Yeap
Thank you

You're welcome

Never heard of it before. The first flag looks like polish flag!

Also the history of the swastika is really interesting. There are some theories that ,before it was used by Nazi, this cross symbolised four aspects of nature - the sun, wind, water and soil.

Thank you for this article!

Thank you so much
Your explanation is interesting
It came from Greek philosophy

Thanks for the beautiful pictures and story! I wish we still had history elements like this but as far as I know we don't have these in Belgium.

I was really surprised to see that was the symbol of Buddha! I'm staying in Germany now and that immediately remindeD me of the Nazis. Kinda crazy to see how something can have such a different meanings!

I did nazi the universal symbol of peace coming.

Have you seen the movie "The Wailing"? It has a strong shamanistic theme.

I lived in Korea for five years but didn't know this! Thanks!

Beautiful pictures and colors ...... I love the traditions of distant countries. Thank you

Interesting post thanks.

Culture and traditions approach distant peoples. Very nice this post..Thanks

you are welcome

the symbol is very old and nothing to do with nazi - see upanishads

👍

Thank you for the vivid images and tight storytelling about the series of Korean culture

you are welcome

I saw NAZI stuff and was like wtf.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

The symbol was in existence before the Nazis used it, long before =)

Yes I know but now it's associated mostly with them.

Maybe in the western world :)

Yes ;)

very colorful dresses and a swastika like but in the opposite direction. Nice article, I learned something new today about Korean superstitions and culture.

There are some primitive religions in Cambodia too... improving my Khmer language skills so I can learn more about it! It is so interesting to learn about other cultures. Such a great post @slowwalker!

Interesting... I love to learn about other cultures. Upvoted and Followed.

A lot of people don't know that he Swastika symbol is ancient and Hitler appropriated it for his one use because he was very much into the occult. So I'm glad you explained the origin of their use of it.

A wonderful insight into the traditions of your homeland. I have heard about the connection between the flag and the Nazis, but I know it has a different meaning for you. As a German, I have already occupied myself with it at least once.

Nice article, thanks for sharing. 100% upvoted.@chanthasam

👍

hello @slowwalker, I like buddhists temples, in Mongolia I visited quite a view, I liked the feeling in it, I felt different in it, like the spiritual power of the temples was going through my body, ..in Germany we do not have temples like this, but we have buddhists communities, I have been once there and meditate with them, it was also a nice experience but not the same like in Mongolia, thanks for sharing ..

Thanks for another great post about Korea. One of dreams is to visit Korea one day.

For us in Czech we are mostly atheist country, but we have strong roots to Celtic and paganistic ways. I can see lot of my friends being kind of nature shamans in their ways. Strange how the situation played out in Czech, but we seem to always be drawn toward nature and it became our religion in a way. Not everyone of course, you would have to search a bit deeper, but for me as native I can see it all around me.That is why paganism is quite strong in Czech my opinion.

Thank you for the article. When I'm in Korea I will look for the signs.

Interesting. It looks bit like a mixture between Buddhism, local cult and Taoism
