Police arrested an 18-year-old American citizen who was on a vacation with his family in Japan on Oct. 23 in connection to a recyclable waste container fire in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department quoted him as saying, “I don’t remember.”

Police are investigating possible links to six other similar incidents that occurred within a 2-kilometer radius on the same day.

The teenager had arrived in Japan with his family for sightseeing on Oct. 9 and was scheduled to return to the United States on Oct. 23, according to the police.

He is accused of setting fire to a plastic container for recyclable waste near the entrance of an apartment building in the ward around 3 a.m. on Oct. 21, investigators said.

He is suspected of causing damage to property.

Surveillance footage from nearby security cameras captured the incident.

During his stay in Japan with his family, the teenager visited tourist spots including Akihabara in Chiyoda Ward and Sensoji temple in Taito Ward.
