Introduction
Over the past few weeks, I've made a conscious effort to take a look through the content of some of the more recent arrivals to the Steem Blockchain.
And, if you've been around a while, it's difficult to remember just how overwhelming this space first felt. I am only occasionally reminded when I introduce friends, or friends of friends contact me for advice.
What I see in the blogs from the newer users is potential, and with some minor improvements, the potential to produce even better work next time around.
Look but don't touch
Something I notice regularly is that when I see a post that has been curated and has been boosted straight into 'hot' or 'trending' with a $30, $50, or even $70 vote, is the lack of comments on the post.
Now this may be because the author is relatively unknown and doesn't have the follower support yet, but the type of comment I'm looking for, from the curator or team, is one of two things along the lines of:
This work is flipping brilliant, and has been chosen for 'this, and that' reason
We liked this work, but you can go a step higher by making 'this, and that' improvement/s
I suspect there are a couple of reasons why these comments are not present.
The first being 'friendly' competition between the curation teams. Adding a comment may show that one of these teams is interested, and potentially (although I'm only speculating here) another team could beat them to the punch with a vote, whilst the first team are compiling their final list of blog to be supported.
My solution here would be to go back to the blogs following the votes and give reasons as to why the work was supported, or give a few tips on how to go one better next time.
The second possible reason, and perhaps less excusable, is the laziness of the curators. Maybe they are over-worked and underpaid, maybe they have nothing to say on the subject/formatting, or maybe the blog is just perfect and could not possibly be improved.
I'm not sure though, I think something positive or constructive can be said about most blogs.
Anyway, the point is that this new blogger is missing out on some potentially valuable feedback, which could help them improve in future....
Curate n' Comment
In light of the above, this is what I've been up to during my curation travels. I've got a text file, which in full, looks something like the below. Of course, not all of the text is relevant for each blog, and so I will chop and change it to suit.
Whilst clearly open to improvement additions, I think that these basic formatting tips, and an effort to source photos and cite articles and quotes, can vastly improve users work.
Benefits
- More consistent blog layouts
- Engagement with new and interesting bloggers
- A good chance of a new follower!
The final point I'd like to expand on and say that for almost all the blogs that I've left feedback on, the user has given me a follow. Now, they may quickly find out that I have nothing of interest to say, but the gesture is there.
And who knows, maybe the encouragement given to them has made them buy 500 SP, and they do like what I'm doing enough to stick 5 cents on some of my work.
End
Curation, particularly towards new users, is key to the growth of blogging on the Steem Blockchain
Why not give them an extra push with some tips to improve next time
Questions and/or feedback are very welcome here, and usually rewarded
Have a nice day and thanks for reading
Asher
If you are reading this blog and have 100,000+ Steem Power, do not wish to sell your vote, and do not care to curate, delegate your SP to me and I will send you 'your' weekly curation rewards having supported 100's of up and coming authors.
Projected rewards for 100,000 Steem Power 150/200 SBDs per week.
You can choose to receive data and charts displaying which authors / reputations / content has been supported.
The author will receive comments on potential improvements to future blog, and a message relating to their supporter (you) if you wish.
Find me on steemit.chat or discord to discuss further. Thank you.
Thanks for the article, although for a beginner like me, I don't quite get how steem power, steam dollars or steem are obtained by curation.
I posted fews articles of my own, resteemed and vote for content of the few person I follow for now and so far after 1 month I still didn't get any curation gains. I event add the busy tag on my article, but didn't get any vote back.
I just see my 0.5 SP and nothing else.
I'm still in the process of setting up my first coinbase account and will try to purchase some steem, but I was under the impression that it was possible to get few pennies every week and a lot more when you're popular.
Anyhow, I didn't really came for the money (ok maybe it's a little appealing), but more for the uncensored alternative to mainstream social networks and the values being the steemit project and ecosystem.
Anyone got advices or can tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Mike
Curation rewards will be almost 0 without Steem Power in the bank - don't worry until you get to 3-500 SP or so.
You only earn Steem Power with curation - this is STEEM, but (in)vested.
Your best source of income early on is to write engaging comments, or a totally killer article - and pray it is seen!
But like this one, spend time with comments - best to write on newer posts as most people are too lazy to reply to older ones!
Also, no need to up-vote anything older than 7 days - neither of us are rewarded for that.
Hope that's helps!

Thanks for the advices, for now I'm still reading posts and listening videos on few topics around steem, cryptocurrencies and doing better posts.
I was wondering why I have 0 curation gains event though I post a bunch of articles, upvote mostly recent articles and post few comments here and there again mainly on recent posts and DTube videos, but still nothing until now.
Can you tell me what this message mean?
"A part of your influence, or STEEM POWER, is actually delegated. The delegation is a donation to raise influence or encourage new user to take actions on Steemit. The delegated amount may vary"
First Curation gains, finally ;)
I managed to transfer some money to have my first STEEMs which was kinda a pain, even now my coinbase account is configured in france while I'm living in Switzerland and their process to change the country doesn't seems to work. I wrote to the support and I'm till waiting to see if they can do something about it. Meanwhile, I used another way with more expensive fees and less interesting trade rates to buy bitcoin and send them to my coinbase wallet to finally be able to transfer it into STEEM and then transfer some of that value in SteemPower.
Thanks for the tip of not upvoting or commenting something older than 7 days, I wasn't aware.
@paulag : That may be an interesting tip to add to your post.
Interesting post on how to do better with steemit

What do you think of it?
You will be my first curation gain. Thanks again ;)

No problem 😊
The number in brackets on the image above is given (loaned) to each new account by Steemit. This allows you to comment/upvote/post as a new user. It will be taken from your account in a few months time.
I am friends with Paula and did read that useful post for new recruits. I'm glad you have your first curation rewards, they will be small to start and comments/posts will easily earn you more in the beginning. Cheers!

Ok thanks for the quick answer.
It seems like we live in a small world sometime ;)
I may have a small question for SteamPower, once that initial amout lended will be grabbed back by the system, do SteemPower eventually degrade by itself overtime?
I mean if I don't go in the process of reselling it myself, will my SteemPower just increase or will it decrease at some point?
As for the weird message in my wallet, I double checked on SteemWorld and it doesn't seem like I'm delegating to someone. And when I'm posting I guess I will switch to 100% SP so that it increase faster in the beginning.
Have a great day and thanks again!

As I was sleeping that was actually a slow reply from me😁
Steem Power doesn't degrade no, it will only rise when you either earn curation rewards or Power Up your STEEM.
SBDs are best traded on the 'Market' (accessible from the dropdown menu next to SBD), if you want to by STEEM to power up.
And no, you are not delegating to anyone, Steemit are delegating to you (the number in brackets) to start you off.
Hope that helps!

Good job! Thanks to @abh12345 you have planted 0.10 tree to save Abongphen Highland Forest in Cameroon. Help me to plant 1,000,000 trees and share my Steem Power to the others. Selfvoting is prohibited, but that should be the reason to spread the world to protect our precious environment. Check out profile of our conservation association @kedjom-keku and the founder/coordinator @martin.mikes to get more information about our conservation program. My current SP is 14302.02. Help me to plant more trees with your delegated SP.
Thanks a lot,

I'm doing something similar but not as intensive. I help people with their hashtags. So many people use bad ones and miss the good and more suitable ones. So it's not hard for me to find the problem and offer solutions. Some people get offended, but I make friends this way for sure.

This is exactly what a blog should look like. Informative. Clear. Well-formatted. Straight-to-the-point. And brilliant.
I think its very important to state that curating content and leaving valuable comments is the key to the future of Steemit. I don't believe in just saying generic things like "nice post", "good point" and other annoyingly spammy comments.
I believe that every user should create a valuable content even with comment. The developers of this site are wise enough to count comments as blog posts. So we must endeavour to make comments count.
It doesn't matter who we are eventually, what matters is the value we have created within and without the minds of other people. That's the true Proof of Brain here.
I have a system for curating content based on this ideology. People are encouraged to leave others better than they found them by giving what I call virtual hugs. For more details, you can see my #Hug-Challenge tag.
Thanks so much @abh12345 for sharing.

I wish I could upvote this twice. I agree wholeheartedly. I would also suggest that that people sort on "new" instead of "trending" or "hot". Inevitably, those options tend to have the same authors over and over again. Sorting by "new" exposes you to all posts in a given category.
Thanks for posting this.

Very true! As an ocd curator myself I had many moments if people would've fix this a bit and that, I could nominate them.
Lately I have been giving some feedback to people. Although doing this for every post I curate is impossible, but I try.
I am hearing other ocd curators doing this more often too. I think there is a shift in this, and newcomers need it.

Yeah @ocd has a great comment that we put on peoples post along the lines of your first post. In general I comment as much as possible due to being frustrated with lack of returns when I first started blogging and after doing some research finding you have to make conversations to find friends.
It's definitely a concern with @ocd with being "sniped" by @currie, but so far the two teams seem to be "playing" well together up to this point :D

Yeah, I try to give some friendly advice too, about tags they can use, about things to be sure to check in the FAQ. I don't get too technicaly, I'm not that tech savvy myself so, I leave that to the experts.

It seems to be a general trend on Steemit, more posts but less and less comments - trend that continues wk after wk, as one very helpful penguin named @penguinpablo has shown in this and previous post, point #4 in his post.

Hi, yes I've been following @penguinpablos's feed - Very interesting to see how things are changing.
Less comments is a worry, but if each one held some value then it wouldn't be so bad. Good comments are a way to attract followers, so I don't see why everyone doesn't make an effort!
