Changes Taking Place on the Steemit Ramble Discord

in curation •  7 years ago

I finally got at doing some renovations on the Steemit Ramble discord server this morning. We passed the 300 member mark this week, so, likely best I don’t wait for chaos to start.

I’ve created some new channels and categories as well as defining the roles in the server and setting permissions to control what the different roles can do.

Getting Started

This is a new category for the channels to get the newbies started. If you’ve been on the Ramble server for a while, you should check out the channels just to be sure you’re current on what is going on.

I have been slack about getting a welcome message written to help visitors understand what the server is about. There is a new channel for the welcome message and the rules for the server. Yeah, it’s about time for some rules.

I’ve also added a channel to describe the different channels and the roles in the server. Some of the channels haven’t been setup yet so, if you don’t see it, it is coming.

People have to register to get upgraded to the first role of “drop-in”. There is a channel to register in. Once you are registered, and a mod sees it, you’ll be upgraded.

Reference Section

I’ve added a channel to post ramble-members-profiles so people can follow each other. You need to be an active member of the server, meaning you’re a Curator, Nominator or you attend PYPT.

Post Promotion

I’ve changed the promote-any-post-here channel so that you have to be a registered user and upgraded to drop-in to be able to post.

I’m giving you fair warning here: I’ll be changing it again in the near future that will not only have to have the Drop-in role but will need to have commented and voted on at least one other person’s post every time you post a link. The comment has to be non-spammy, in other words, ‘great post’ isn’t going to cut it.

The only reason I’ve not changed it yet, is I have some other things I want to look after first. I’ll post when it changes.

The Steemit Ramble discord server is about curating good content and encouraging people to network and share with others. If I leave that promotion channel as a link drop, it isn’t in keeping with the purpose of the server.

Community management isn't easy especially as you pass the 300 member mark. And I can see it's really growing in active participants of the PYPT sessions. Mee6 is a great bot just for welcoming new members. There is an option both on it and on Dyno to send an automated private message to people who join. Those might be useful to you. I'm really hoping somebody would develop a bot that would do the work of allowing people who have upvoted and/or commented to drop their posts. It would probably be a pretty complex bot but my god it would help me out. Right now my server only prevents new members from link dropping without voting because it would just take too long to check every active member every time. I've noticed lots of servers picking up the same design and wonder if anybody has found a way to automate it yet.

thanks @votu for your suggestion about Mee6. I haven't looked at that one yet, but likely will tinker eventually and see how it could be put to use.

As more servers move away from straight link dropping to expecting more engagement, someone may yet rise to the challenge of automating checking that their has been votes and/or comments made.

@shadowspub i have been polishing a bot for discord communities, it acts basically as a janitor moving links out of the way to the desired channel and does other stuff like tell VP of user, and other useful information upon request.

It also has a rotating message module that allows to set some messages randomly at intervals.

I hate the discord servers where there is BOT noise everywhere, so i coded the janitor to delete his own messages after a sensible period (10 to 15 seconds) So you get a friendly bot that reminds from time to time several rotating messages that could be events, information, rules reminders.

Anyway if you are interested in testing i am deploying beta versions to iron the bugs, @votu is the first out of the house beta tester community, you can see it in action there.

I'm not sure if I'm already in this discord group or not. The link takes me to a blank discord page. Maybe it's my computer...

BUt i like the looks of this. I understand the stance on promoting. And I appreciate seeing other types of community organizers reflect on management. I try to help new friends boots to ground style on facebook and in person. I run Facebook Groups since that is where everyone I know is, and I just try to help them. Its not easy. So it just helps moral when I see others reflect on the challenges. Be well.

I've found mixed results from clicking on discord links. I usually will copy the link and go directly to Discord to enter the link to the new server.

is your FB group a STEEM related group or another subject? Managing a group is never easy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts @jacobts

Hi @shadowspub, thanks for inviting me along to the PYPT sessions - I totally enjoy them. It's a great way to broaden one's view of steemit, and to meet more of the interesting folk on here.

thank you for being one of the faithful attendees @pennsif... love seeing you there. Yes, we do get some interesting people and their posts take part.

Hey @shadowspub! I have followed and voted, thanks again for your personal attention and support early today on discord, I know I can ask alooooot of questions haha, but you answered them all in great detail, so thank you for being so accommodating to a new community member :)
Look forward to contributing in my small way to the community :)

great to see you join us @nicknightshade.... I'm getting the feeling that you're going to be a lot of fun to have around.

I'm the loud guy at the party that you either have the best time with or hate because you never gave yourself the chance to like him haha look forward to contributing where and when I can :) I think I summoned you elsewhere too on one of @adriansilas 's posts :)

300 members? That's wonderful! Congratulations :D
I hope to get myself in there soon if things slow down after the holidays ;)

We'll be looking forward to you joining in @jrhughes. We have great fun at PYPT.

Excellent. I will have a mooch through later. You provide an awesome service but as you have discovered, there need to be rules in place as you grow.

Thanks @gmuxx. I've tried to keep the rules to a minimum in the likely vain hope that they will stay minimal. Hope springs eternal eh :)

Yes, lol

I never realised we were growing that much.... I guess lots of people are finding the great works you do over there and they all want to be part.

Keep doing good

yeah it's pretty cool and am finding when I set the purge for those not seen in 30 days, there are very few getting purged.

Great. You are doing well ma'am. I will go check through. Thanks for the information. I think the server is getting bigger and it need more moderation. Keep it up.

@seyiodus.

yes the need for moderation is growing ... mostly at this point it is making sure links aren't posted where they shouldn't be

I LOVE that you are making good ol' fashioned manual curation a priority. I'm avoiding the 'like my post and I'll like yours' stuff, and the bots..... I am all for upvoting something because I think it's worthy.

I'm going to head on over to the Discord server and join the fun 😊🙏🏽☯️

will be glad to see you @peterloupelis. The next Pimp Your Post Thursday is tomorrow, Jan 4th

I'm a few hours ahead of most people (Australia), so I hope I'm awake by the time it starts happening....

I'm going to have to check this out more.

will love to see you join in and introduce folks to stacking @pheliminit.

@shadowspub, this is great news. Will the restriction on posting be a technical solution, or will it be policy enforced by humans? I think it is something that is needed in almost any of the link drops on discord.

Initially @moeknows it will be a manual solution. There is something potentially being worked on to make a technical solution. Will see how that develops.

Good rules, and they make perfect sense to help ensure that good content is curated and not just people looking for easy votes/money.

I mean, we all like making money, but unless we want to see Steemit reduced to only spammers, we do have to put in the work to encourage good posts. I appreciate the work you put into this endeavor!

thank you @morodiene ... I want to keep rules to a minimum but as the number of people grows, that will be hard to do.

And we definitely don't want to encourage spammers or trolls anywhere on the platform.
