Crafting Paragraphs on Your Posts

in curation •  7 years ago

One of the pet peeves that I have when curating posts on the platform is those long blocks of text that people use for paragraphs. They distract from a pleasant reading experience. Reading a post should not be a struggle, it should be an experience of being drawn through the post using a combination of well crafted wording and a pleasant reader experience.

Those of us raised reading on the printed page often saw long paragraphs making them seem to the norm. They often are on the written page. Viewing on an electronic screen is a different experience. Our eyes react different to electrons than to paper.

The Quick Evolution of the Paragraph

Like most elements of writing, paragraphs have evolved through the ages. In the oldest Greek texts, the only form of punctuation mentioned by Aristotle was a horizontal line called the paragraphos was placed under the beginning of a line in which a new topic was introduced.

By the 17th century the line space between paragraphs was introduced along with the concepts of indenting them and capatalizing the start of a sentence.

The line space wasn’t strongly adopted until well into the 20th century when printing costs dropped drastically with wood based papers rather than vellum.

Screen reading has dropped the indent on paragraphs. The “white” space created by the paragraph break gives the eye a very brief rest. Reading on a screen can tire the eyes quickly

What Should A Paragraph Look Like?

Paragraphs introduce a new topic. In printed text, the paragraph often will introduce the topic and then give the discussion to go with it. On the screen, paragraphs need to break the topic into related discussions similar to the format you see when reading a newspaper.

Notice the paragraphs in this post are varied but not long? That is what you’re shooting toward when writing a post. You also need to break the text up with headings or graphics. Large paragraphs broken with graphics doesn’t do it. Your paragraphs need to be as compact as possible.

Let’s Look At An Example to Illustrate

Here is a paragraph I plucked out of a posts of overlong paragraphs. I wont center-out the author by naming him/her.

The Original:

Don't just sit there and be a bank or a "baller" in some cases. That won't mean a damn thing when you cannot access any of it. DO SOMETHING positive with that! Invest in the network that pays your bills. This would be akin to helping to build highways in a local or national level. These help everyone, but ESPECIALLY those that use them more often. Investments like these by large corporations, guilds, associations, committees and organizations in the "real world" insure that their products and ideas can spread abroad thus equaling more profits for them in the long run simply because they invested in the means in which people will access these products and ideas, and how they are distributed. This is no different with steem. The technology that runs this network (seed nodes) provide the means for product sellers (authors and curators) to distribute their ideas and products abroad. They are our highways. Our pipelines and utilities. It is critically important that these are not only always working and available (so that our products can be consumed without issue), but it is also critical that control of these said "highways" be neutral and unaffected by the politics that are at hand within the current hierarchy of top 10 witnesses. This is not meant to piss anyone off or undermine anyone's effort. It's not meant to step on anyone's toes or invoke a spirit of competition with anyone else's interests in any way. This is a problem that affects everyone so getting witness votes and support from whales (not just other witnesses or top 20 witnesses) is essential to help the community flourish.

Pretty brutal reading, right? Now Let’s see if that can be broken down into something easier on the eyes:

Do you see the difference in the reading experience? The exact same words, but easier to make your way through. Well, there was a run on sentence in there but that wasn’t for me to fix as part of this post. Maybe another time, I’ll take a look at sentence structure.

Hope this helps.

I absolutely agree with you. It shouldn't be a struggle to read a post -- or an essay or an article. Presentation counts. Help yourself -- help your reader!!! Make it attractive and easy on the eyes. Thank you for this extremely important and helpful post. It's going straight into the channels where I have influence. Maybe some who need it will take it to heart!!

thank you @enchantedspirit that is my hope in writing the post is that those who just don't know better will take the guidance. I know some wont change or think it is just my opinion rather than informed awareness.

I try to follow these guidelines when I craft posts and emails. I'm overly verbose sometimes, so thinking about paragraph length and vocabulary density is especially important, to make my writing more accessible.

nothing wrong with verbosity @josephsavage ... it quite often comes with a strong dose of knowledge. It is disheartening to come across posts that are so hard to be able to get through in order to receive that knowledge. So, good for you being aware of making your writing accessible.

OH!! Excellent... this is a re-steemer! Thanks @shadowspub.

thank you for the resteem @artemisnorth

Thank you for this very valuable information! Between the internet, social media and being a creature of habit my writing/English has gone downhill! I pray my group finds this as valuable as I do! Thank you so much for your valiant efforts to improve the Steemit platform and coincidently all of our investments!

On another note, I need to stop using as much "!" Punctuations!😜 Maybe you or @ntowl can broach this subject in the near future.

Much love to you, your friends and family
@dynamicgreetk

Really cool how Steemit encourages not only community but the opportunity to learn and grow by actually using your brain!

Funny, earlier today I was thinking I should cover punctuation, particularly exclamation points. I use them way too much as well to indicate my enthusiasm but too much is too much!

sounds like you have at least on student willing to hear @ntowl :)

it's sometimes hard to contain or express enthusiasm in writing. A challenge that would definitely improve our writing to use less ! and more of the craft of words. You can do it.

I have the hardest time with that. I'll often go through and take out exclamation points so I don't look overtly eccentric.

And then I switch the out for smileys because, well, I want people to know I'm excited! Or kidding, since I'm a smartass at times and that has a tendency to come across all wrong on the screen. 😏

Excellent post, BTW. There are some great writers on here that would probably have more votes if they heeded the words. Resteeming! There's that damn exclamation point again - I'm going to end this here because the urge for another smiley is just...too...strong...ARGGHHHH

Good Lord, you wrote this a year ago? it feels like yesterday!! You have no idea how many people I show this post to and with that in mind you would think I have it bookmarked but Nooooooooo LOLLL

Oh and Morning :D

Thanks for remembering and reminding me about this post. For some reason when I tried to view it on Steemit.com it came up as an error page. It shows up fine on Steempeak though.

you are teasing, maybe I came here for sentence structure :D

I can say it's not as taxing on focus to read in small chunks rather than big blocky mess you have to unravel, but I'm already used to both,

I would agree it's better to take care of the eyes and not to strain them all day every day, take some preventative measures and exercise the muscles as well as keep in mind the blink rate,

we don't blink as much when we are reading on a screen, doing anything on a screen for that matter, colors moving parts all make us focus on them, so the retina and the muscles controlling the eye are kept under constant tension,

so they loose durability and ability to move ....

annnnyways :D time to break into paragraphs, yeah looks a bit better, no time to edit and punctuate it's good enough :D

amazing how that white space can improve even text without punctuation eh?

I don't know if I heard this before from someone or just started doing it. I wrote a post today and it started as a long paragraph, but read so much better when I broke it up.

Thanks for encouraging the thought process.

The longgggg blocks of text with no breaks are "no bueno"....I write Gonzo style clearly but even with that format there should be a flow that makes you not wanna smack yo'self
good post

or make the reader want to smack you with a big fish.

God yes. Just, yes.

What a great post!!!! Thank you for this :D and I agree 100% with what you said LOLL.

Thanks for helping us all become better bloggers and writers Shadow! :)

Thanks for the advice... I feel I still can improve my formatting... I've overwhelmed by the lack of time and have learned to control markdown slowly ahahha :)

Markdown can be a bit of a challenge at times. I have kind of a basic set of markdown I use and then occasionally explore further. I find that doing so lets me focus more on my content and less on the formatting. Templates have been a time saver for me.

I have been wanting to improve my signature and add dividers but I wanted them to be my own and need to find time to make them. By the time I finish articles I usually am mire concerned of content but surely they could be improved by better formatting. A basic template sounds like a sensible idea also to add consistency of looks. Need to try that. Thank you 🐱🐀

I will never forget you taking the time to give me a lesson on how to correctly use paragraphs and look at me now people actually read my stuff wow!!

Nice post!! I suddenly had a flashback of Sister Anthony at the Convent of Mercy in 7th Grade drilling us on topic sentences! haha... :)

Sometimes I read posts on my feed in steemit, and I feel like I've walked into a beautiful garden that has been turned into a vomit cesspool. I could yell, "Don't do that!" to the man with the crazed look in his eyes as he spoons the yellow gunk into a plastic bag, but I don't, because I see his family loading those plastic bags into cardboard happy meal boxes they found in the dumpster nearby.

This post was really well written. I wish they could all be that way. I really have to scratch my head sometimes when I read posts that look like they are written by someone with a head case. Is there any hope? Or for the rest of us and our virgin eyes?

I think writing poetry is kind of cross-training for improving the visual effect of prose. In poetry, the visual is part of the experience. I think it's the license to change form at will that encourages use of the visual. That also goes for punctuation. We can follow the conventions of prose and still employ visually attractive techniques. Also, we can be adventurous and try breaking set rules. I mean, where did those rules come from? They evolved over time. We are part of that evolution, aren't we? A thoughtful piece--and one that's bound to influence all who read it.

Such a great post @shadowspub. I know this but obviously as you point out many Steemians do not .

It does make it so much easier to read when broken into smaller paragraphs. Again thank you for this post :)
