AutoSteem Updates and Getting Started with Autovoting for Curation

in curation •  8 years ago  (edited)

AutoSteem has been a great project and I'm continually working hard to improve it. I've made some minor updates recently to fix a number of issues with the filters and voting modes. They were not all working for everyone over the last week or two and unfortunately, caused some frustration and headaches for users and me! With many bug fixes and hours spent, though, I wanted to help share a bit of the updates and some simple ways to get started using Autosteem.

Recent Updates

  • The voting page that shows the "Latest Blog on Steemit", now shows up to 10 images from the post, so you can easily see photo collections if you want to manually upvote them immediately or add to your vote Q for a delayed vote.

  • Voting Filters displays on the voting page to show matches, no matches, filters turned off or paused filters from low voting power.

  • View Filters to show matches or no matches for your custom views

  • In Autosteem's Browsing mode, links for author and Post Titles now open in new tabs, to keep autosteem running and active.

  • Filters have an automatic validation when Autosteem starts, and added or corrects missing or blank parameters. This was caused from previous versions having less filters and parameters, which autosteem now handles automatically of course. :)

  • fixed a bug where the browser would jump back to page 1 when it starting loading more content at the end of your page list (for the content view)

  • the Comments View now shows the latest comment at the top, with your filter applied to show the colors for match (green) and no match (red) on the author, tag and message for each comment.

AutoSteem Basics:

  • Autosteem is an automation tool for voting, curating and better browsing of Steemit!
  • Its an application that runs in your browser and only needs your posting key, which is secured in the browser only, so never uploaded to any server
  • You can browse steemit, review photos with photo cards, image galleries and custom filtered views for each, even comments.
  • There are some powerful filters to to setup and turn on and off for auto voting (with 3 modes):

Advanced AutoVoting

This is actually the most advanced filter. It lets you configure a range of parameters to define what gets voted. Any match gets added to the voteQ, and it waits until the blog is at least the age you specify using "Delay Minutes". This ensures you vote an optimal time AFTER the post to maximize curation rewards. Ideally, you vote at 30 minutes, but are still one of the first voters.

This filter lets you define minimum reputation, vesting shares, image counts and many other things to set the rules for the vote.

Favorite Blogs

This is a much easier filter to use, since it has less options, and it is used to auto vote any blog from your favorite authors, but still using a delay after the blog is created, to maximize curation rewards.

You can copy a list of followers/following from those views in autosteem, or enter your own list of authors. Just build a list, separated by commas for each author and it will vote for them. You do NOT need to use the @ for any author names.

Smart Copy

This is the simplest autovote mode, but a little less personal. You just tell it which authors to copy and it does just that, copies all of their votes so you don't have to setup anything else, just leave AutoSteem running.

Getting Started

The easiest is to setup your favorite authors (comma separate the list), and start the favorite blogs filter. If you want you can also turn on the copy filter and copy me or any other authors to improve your curation rewards.

Then check the voting page as blogs are posted you will see something like this:

You should see when a blog post matches the column for the blog voting filter (which only checks authors so you won't see it very often for your favorite authors) but you can also turn on the advanced filter and check what items are matching. Once they are all green, that post should be added to the voteQ below. Then when the delay time is met, and all the columns go green to match your advanced filter, it will be vote automatically.

Use the Vote History to see all votes that have happened.

View Filters

These filters are used from the comments view, photos view and blogs view pages. They allow you build a custom views to only show the content you want when review everything that AutoSteem has captured for you. You can then search those pages, page through them and clear the content when you've seen it all and want to start collecting again fresh.

Views

Once AutoSteem has been running for a while, you can then review content or search it in the comments, blogs and photo view. The photo view has a full image gallery which opens per post for reviewing the images full screen as well!

Here are what the other views look like for images:

Photo View

Blog View

Browsing Mode

The browsing mode in Autosteem lets you view some image based cards to help you curate the content you love. You can vote directly from the cards or link to the title to view and comment on steemit.

You can view hot, new and trending content, as well author feeds and blogs or specific content tags, all which you can customize for your convenience.

What Features Would You Like to See?

I hope to keep adding and improving AutoSteem and so am happy to see more people using it. I have a lot of additional ideas, like automated follower/following tools as part of steemit, as I think it could be really powerful as well as some nice user search tools to help find users of interest.

I hope to eventually add commenting and full page views as well, but I've been focused more on the automation tools that just don't exist elsewhere yet for steemit, so I'd love to hear your ideas, feedback and suggestions? What do you think?

With browsing and all, this could actually be a replacement for the Steemit interface - not a bad thing as there are mobile apps that do different things as well - eg; eSteem

The voting part is iffy. with the advanced voting, it will wait until 29 minutes to vote but will actually make the vote 7 hours later (if that is now long it takes to reach the min. payout) I would like a bot that will vote at 28 min. the post has over $1.00 - if the posts hits 50 min or 2 hours and still has not hit the 1.00 - I don't want to waste a vote.

Logical would be :
Minimum Delay Maximum Delay

btw - it doesn't work nor update anything on "chromium" browser (linux)
Works on Firefox.
I refuse to run any google apps or browsers - they have no scruples.

Thanks sponge-bob, great feedback suggestions. Ya, currently, only the min delay time must be reached, problem is also that an edited post, shows a post, but could be hours old at that stage. Autosteem only expires votes after the first 24hr or '1st' payout period right now.

I wouldn't say voting is iffy there sponge-bob, it does exactly what its programmed to do. There seems to be a hundred different things people want bots to do, one bot can't do everything for everyone that is for sure.

As for browser preference, just as many opinions out there, you're free to use or not use whatever you like. I've found that Autosteem works best in chrome, works for many users in chromium on ubuntu, and firefox works, but won't run for many hours without crashing or memory leaking in my experience and I can't seem to find out why, although firefox does that to me on many websites, not just autosteem.

Anyway, I've added your request to my list of possible features, to have a maximum delay as well before expiring a vote, so thanks for that ! I hope you can make good use of it still!

Is autosteem now abandoned? It's not working since the recent updates at the start of the year and continues reporting the error message

"Error Communicating to Steemit WebSocket through SteemJS. Please refresh the page to try again or try later.
Error Message: The WS connection was closed before this operation was made"

I see that someone notified you via a wallet note ~2 weeks ago.
If it's abandoned, I'll stop checking back to see if it's working and look for an alternative for random upvoting

Hi ratticus, its definitely NOT abondoned. Lots of people still use it (including myself) but for the last week or two it was non-functional, as I had been travelling, busy and unable to fix some changes with the SteemJS websocket streems. Anyway, just fixed it tonight and everything should be back up and running. Sorry fro the delay, life was holding me on other projects lately. I don't expect to develop a lot of new things any more for autosteem, but its already a pretty great tool (so I'm told by everyone who uses it) so please do give it another go and lets others know. THANKS for asking, and the timing on this one! :) cheers

Glad to hear that. Always a struggle to maintain a private project when travelling and working. Thanks for the great work on a useful project

Funny, I never check my wallet so never saw that message anyway. hehe. And it didn't show up in autosteem for me. even funnier.

It's been working great for me since we last communicated. The filters haven't missed a vote from what I have observed. This is a great curation tool, thanks for persevering with it.

Thanks @naquoya, that's great to hear, I've seen the same since getting these voting kinks out. Its was tough to get so many updates out so fast without experiencing some bugs. I hope to focus on some new users / follow interaction, maybe comments sometime in the future now as well. Always looking for more ideas where automation can help and where there aren't other tools covering it already. I think auto-following of comments and and auto-return following might be helpful as well, I've been thinking about some of that as well.

Nice! Thank you for your effort to update autosteem. :)

Good Job!

Very good post!!!! I like it!!!!!

Thanks bugavi, glad it was useful!

AutoSteem looks really cool, but for me having to leave my computer running with browser open for it to work is a deal breaker. I appreciate you want to ensure maximum security for posting keys by not requiring users to upload them anywhere, but I prefer the 24 hour per day "always on" voting that Steem Voter provides. If you could add support for that, I'd give your service a try.

Thanks cryptomancer for the feedback. I realize some people don't want to leave their browser running, and for those people, there are other services to use. I won't be adding that to autosteem likely as I don't want the server headaches or costs and there are already other services for exactly that, so why try to duplicate it? There is much more to autosteem then autovoting, so you can use the browser and follower/ing information without it. I have more to come but obviously its designed to work best when left running with the full services in browser.

Fair enough, as you say there are alternatives for people who prefer that sort of behavior. That's one of the great things about the open nature of the Steem API: anyone can develop apps that interact with the blockchain in different ways, giving end users a large amount of choice in what services to take advantage of.

It looks like AutoSteem has a pretty rich feature set, so maybe I'll still check it out to see if I like the non-voting aspects of it. Thanks for your hard work on what looks like a really nice tool for the community!

great work!

I enjoyed using Autosteem for a week or two - pretty phenomenal - but then it suddenly stopped letting me setup. I continue to get the message at the top reminding me I still need to setup in 'Options'. I've refreshed my posting key several times. What could I be doing wrong? Thank you for letting me sqeeze this question in here, but I can't find the answer anywhere!

Hi areynolds, sorry to hear you are having troubles with autosteem. The message about missing setup can occur for 2 reasons, you don't anything setup (posting key or steemitID missing) OR if you don't get any response from the steemit API, which autosteem checks to show your account details (like your voting power) on the left side in the blue box. Otherwise, that message shouldn't show up top. It can fail to load the info for that box if there is a really slow or poor quality internet connection AND I've had a couple other users with problems on a specific computer, yet it works from another one or from their mobile, which we don't know why yet.

If you can try from another device check that please. Otherwise, please give me any specifics you can from your system by pressing F12 to show the console, and send me that as a reply here or in steemit chat in case autosteem is showing any errors there in the console.

After days of this issue, it suddenly began working properly. Until that point, I had tried it on my mobile and 3 browsers on my laptop! All's well that ends well.Thank you for your reply!

glad to hear that, awesome. it seems like some browsers are really good at sticking to old cached versions. May have to find a solution to that issue too, glad its working for you now though, awesome!

great work @miner76

Hi mate @unipsycho - I have a problem - I have (now stopped) Smart Vote Copying to copy the votes of another author - I see in my history copied votes but none of the posts I see an up vote from me, why is that?

hmm, not sure there uwelang. It sounds like the posting key you are using may not match correctly, so the vote is failing. Can you try a manual vote on a post and then check if it is voted on in steemit. If not, then please check re-enter your posting key (private posting key) as it may be copied in wrong or something. If you can open your console in your browser (using F12) and copy and paste or save the log to file and send that to me on steemit chat or in a reply, I will look if there are any errors showing up in your browser log.

ok trying this and report back, thanks @unipsycho

It seems to work again now! Thanks for the hint @unipsycho

Sorry for the confusion. is it need to continuously run on my pc. Or i can off my pc.? and it will run.

Autosteem runs only when you have it open in your browser, so yes, you have to leave your pc open for it to work.

Thanks for your reply. But unfortunatly it is not opeing in my pc. I dont know why? I tried in all browsers.

hi,
i am using your tool and feel that much improvement can be done like one should be able to vote with full voting power instead of copying voting power.

secondly, there should be more filter for voting posts for example number of minutes since post was posted, minimum no. of votes, min. number of SBD earned etc.

Also in filtered posts avearge SBD of last 10 posts of authers should be shown. this will help us in taking better curation decisions.

Let me know if you like the idea. We can work together to this tool much better.

This post has been ranked within the top 50 most undervalued posts in the second half of Feb 14. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $7.49 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.

See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Feb 14 - Part II. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

If you are the author and would prefer not to receive these comments, simply reply "Stop" to this comment.

@unipsycho would you consider sharing the best curatorship earnings ?

I'm trying to use it.
I support you!
