CURIOUS FACTS CONTEST #5: Interesting Facts about Sloths

Curious Facts Thumb.jpg

So I have developed a thing for sloths. I mean, these little creatures are so cute, what’s not to like?! I don’t think I’d mind being one. They are lazy and carefree – two characteristics I wish I had the opportunity to be again! (Not possible with a husband and two kids though)

As part of the Curious Facts contest run by @river-island, I have decided to share some fun facts about sloths. I didn’t even know a couple of these before I did my research!

5 Interesting Facts about Sloths

Sloth Fact #1: Sloths use the bathroom only once a week.

Can you imagine that? It’s sad in a way, since they typically suffer from constipation when it’s time to go. I’m sure it’s so painful for those cute little guys. And if you ever catch a sloth pooping, you could actually see his lower abdomen shrink before your eyes.

Sloth Fact #2: Sloths only sleep 10 hours a day.

Though they have a rep for being extremely lazy, they don’t actually sleep the whole time they are laying around. The only time they are upright, however, is when down on the ground of going to the bathroom.

Sloth Fact #3: Sloths are camouflaged by the green algae that grow on their fur.

Okay, I had no idea about this…and I have never seen a green sloth! But I am sure it’s helpful when they are in the trees, blending in, to protect themselves from predators.

Sloth Fact #4: A sloth’s grip can hold strong even after death.

So how do you know if a sloth has passed away or is just sleeping? That has to be tough! I guess it’s to be expected, as much time as they spend in trees. They even give birth hanging from a branch!

Sloth Fact #5: Sloths can live to be 40 years old.

That’s seriously a lot of lounging around!

I've seen sloths back in Costa Rica hehe they are nice to watch but they really move slow. Thanks for sharing this facts :)

Thank you for commenting! I have only seen sloths in zoos. It would be amazing to see them in their natural environment, I'm sure.

Thank you for participating in Curious Facts Contest #5

Sloths are cute. 😊

Resteemd and Upvoted!

Thanks, @river-island! I'm glad I found your contest and was able to join in.

How interesting! I've never seen a sloth in person (at least not that I can remember), but I'd like too. I can't believe they only go to the bathroom once a week, OMG!

I know! I was very surprised to find that out when researching them. Poor little guys!!!

Okay, I no longer wish to be a sloth in my next life because I don't want to eliminate only once a week. Poor sloths. I wonder how long it takes them!!

Yeah, I thought it would be nice to be like them. But, then I read that and was like, I'm good! :)

OMG, only once a week. Ouch! Sloths are pretty curious guys after all!

I know, right?! They are so cute, I hate they have to go through that!

I have resteemed a post from the group! :)

I love the design of your post, and the very cute photos of sloths! I love sloths! I spent four weeks in Costa Rica, but didn't see a single sloth. I'll just have to go back there sometime.
To be honest, I think the fact that sloths give birth while hanging from a branch is the most interesting of all - does the baby sloth just plummet to the ground? Or does it catch onto another branch in mid-flight and just hang there... maybe I'll look into this!

That is a good question, @natubat! I am not sure what happens. I'll have to research that more myself. Thanks for stopping by and reading. :)

"Only" ten hours of sleep, lol! That actually sounds like the best part of being a sloth. I had no idea they only went once a week, though. That's pretty much a deal breaker.

I was actually shocked that the number of hours they sleep were so low. You hear so much about how lazy they are, I figured it would be much higher! And yes, definitely a deal breaker :)

@keciah, this is really well done! I really like your use of graphics. I saw a sloth at a zoo recently. They are so interesting! Nice work.

Thank you for your kind words! And yes, they are very interesting creatures :)

Sloths poop only once a week?

It's funny that this came up. My daughter LLOVES sloths and my son was watching a documentary this week about the worlds deadliest animals... and apparently sloths are on that list. They have vicious claws and teeth, so they're SLOW, but if they catch you, you're in trouble!

Great post!
