Top 5 tourist sites in Cusco Peru

in cuzco •  7 years ago

Peru is an amazing country steeped in history. The landscapes, culture & history have drawn me back on multiple trips.

Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire dating back to the 13th century. This place is very sacred and special to the remaining descendants of the Inca.

Cusco is perched high up in the Andees mountains at 3000 m above sea level. Anyone flying in may need a few days to acclimatise.

Here are my top 5 things to do in Cusco.

1. Visit the sacred valley

The sacred valley of the Incas is where many of the preserved ruins of the Inca cities still exist today, many as world heritage sites.

You can take a tour from Cusco in a mini bus and visit the major sites, and the Inca salt pools.

This day trip is an early start and a late return as there is so much to see.

The tour can be booked in Cusco from many operators.

2. Machu Picchu & the Inca trail

No trip to Peru is complete without visiting Machu Picchu and this place is truly magical, perched on the side f a mountain this wonder of the world does not disappoint.

If you intend to trek the Inca trail to Machu Picchu you better get in early, bookings run months sometimes seasons in advance. Only a select number of people are allowed on the trail per day, book early to avoid dissapointment.

3. Sacsayhuamán

Another world heritage site, this citadel is a short walk up hill from Cusco city. The area has been inhabited since as early as 900 CE, the masonry work and scale of this site will astound you considering the tools they had available.

4. Rainbow mountain

The Rainbow mountain trek is an all day trip. A 3hr drive from Cusco to the trail head and with a 5 hr hike up to 5200 m above sea level, this is for fit people. However you are rewarded with a spectacular view.

This trip can be quite busy so be prepared to not have a solo view of the mountains.

5. Stroll the street of Cusco

Even in the city of Cusco there is so much history and vibrancy.

Stroll the streets looking at the local souvenirs, sit in one of the fantastic range of cafes and watch the crazy world of Cusco go by.

Cusco seems to have turned itself in to the Vegan capital of Peru, so if you like eating plants, try one of the many great cafes!
