As we move to a much more online / cash only economy the risk for global disruption grows larger. While I, myself, are guilty of relying on contactless payments for convenience, it does seem that maintaining some cash holdings for urgent purchases would be a wise thing to do.

I agree. Plastic is easy and convenient. You get points or cash back. But we short ourselves in the foot if we allow cash to go out of circulation.
