I'm sure hitting the pavement hurts more these days than it used to. Cycling fails revisited whilst loaded up on codeine to reduce the pain from my latest incident.
Rare in-saddle footage
Having only passed my driving test 3 years ago and living close to workplaces for most of my life, I've mainly been a public transport user or cyclist. And I think as a 2 wheel user, you have to expect some accidents from thousands of miles in the saddle. The hope being that when they do arrive it's not too serious.
When I was younger I remember finding small ramp near my house, it looked like polystyrene was the material supporting the board, and so I thought I'd go the other way and slice that weak-ass material in half with my razor sharp wheels. One mid-air 360 later, I realised that was not the material used. Damn pasty looking breeze-blocks.
There was a time that you could return glass pop bottles to the shop and get a small return for doing so. I excitedly left the house with a couple of bottles in a bag which was looped over the handlebars, flew down the hill opposite the house, and produced another 360 as one of the bottles found its way into spokes of the front wheel.
My legs are scarred from incidents like this as a child, and as a young adult I was pretty lucky not to exit planet earth following a motorcycle exit at the top of a hill in Thailand. Lots of blood and aches, a fractured hand and a hairline skull fracture the damage from that one. Apart from a ringing ear for life, I've gotten away with it so far I think. Things definitely could have ended up differently.
Last summer was not complete without a couple of more recent cycling fails, misjudging the width of my handlebars and catching a post had me on the floor laughing at the shitness of my skills, and being blown over by wind due to trying to take a fully inflated li-lo home from the beach was pretty cool too. The full bar of people it happened outside of enjoyed that one.
The weekend just gone brought about my latest calamity. Heading to the shops for teabags, (yes, I really need teabags OK) under a slight shower influenced the trip as the bike unusually slipped out to the side whilst i was slowly turning a corner. I wasn't even going that fast, but the slippery surface got me good. Winded and embarrassed in case anyone saw, which they did, I got up quickly and then the pain arrived. I smiled sheepishly at the old lady in the white car who'd slowed down to give me a stern look - yeah, I wanted to write 'to see If I was OK', but her face was more like 'serves you right for being a tourist'.
It's weird when you cant take in a lung full of air. Being winded does that, and so does a sharp pain every time you get half full. That's how it's been for the last couple of days, but the meds are helping and I'm pretty sure it's nothing to bad. I'm also sure I'd have just got back up laughing 20 or so years ago, stuff seems to hurt more and repair more slowly these days - and I could have 40 more years of these days left. Fack!
I guess i'll have to 'be careful', and 'go slowly', as I'm often told before those words go out the other ear. That sounds terribly boring though, but could help reduce the number of days in bed without good reason. I've just made an egg on toast, it was almost an egg on bread as the toaster almost defeated me - pushing down not my strong point at present as the ribs were quick to tell me so.
Right, back to bed, oh wait, I'm already here, writing to you.
Have a nice day all, and don't forget to take care of yourselves :)
Asher
Poor guy! I hope you feel better soon. Meanwhile, here. Have this.
I'm a bike person, too and am fortunate to live in a city with a huge bike culture. There have been ssssssooooooooooo many times when I should have been squished like a bug by cars on the road and managed to escape by sheer luck. Scary stuff but not enough to keep me off my beloved "Battleship". It's a 70lb solid steel 1941 cruiser. I can jump curbs on this bitch! In heels and a skirt, no less. We don't play around.

Looks like me and my brother as kids on the bikes there, nice! Yes we had blonde hair and looked like girls due to mum's hair-doing :)
What a terrible record though! haha
Check out your bike though, what a beast! Did you spray it, or one of the owners before you? Over here, that usually means it's been stolen.
70 lbs haha, they don't make them like they used to!

That's not paint, it's rust. I bought it from a guy who'd had it sitting around in a garage for years and the humidity got to it. I sanded it down and painted it copper. Here's the during phase...

...and the after
That paint spill on the cement wasn't me... lol
I love how it looks. Someone stole it from outside my house once. I put a picture of it on craigslist with a reward and within an hour, I got a call from a lady who saw a dude riding it down her street. I was able to figure out where the guy lived and a big burly friend went over there, knocked on the door, decked the thief and carried it back to me.

The bike certainly looks a lot better, new owner taking much better care of it.
I wish I had a burly friend last year who could deck whoever robbed my bike.
So Craigslist isn't just for drugs and sexy time? Who knew!

Ha ha, that was a real cavalcade of cycling mishaps... I think my favorite for comedy value is:
For a sharing of the sheepish-ness I'll describe my best cycling mishap.
This happened about 3 years ago when I used to do a regular ride down the river Mersey along otterspool parade. I was turning a corner near the beginning of the ride by the marina when I noticed an ideot dog walker with one of those retractable leads and a little Yorkie dog blocking the path with the 'cheese wire' lead so I swerved to go between the small gap between the river's railing and a bench. The space was probably just big enough to get the bike through safely but I misjudged it and the pedal clipped the bench as I rode through sending me up and over the handlebars with the bike crashing down on top of me afterwards. Luckily, having been a crazy skateboarder as a teen, my slam reactions kicked in and I managed to kick the bike away as I went over so it only landed partly on me, and take the majority of impact on my chest and leg. I got away with a few bruises and a sprain on one of my wrists.
The dog walker was freaking out, especially as I was swearing at him pretty loudly, but he couldn't speak English, I think he might have been Polish tbh, and kept asking me something or other in another language.
That is exactly how I felt after that incident, except I think you may have slammed worse than me cause mine receaded after 10-15 mins.
Anyway, take it easy with the Codeine buddy, that sht will fck you up 😂

I was hoping someone would share a mishap :D
haha 'cheese-wire', those retractable leads are dangerous all round and the owners don't seem to know how to control them with the dog heading out into the road, and getting too close to people while the owner looks puzzlingly at the device.
Nice job on booting the bike away from your head / danger regions, I have never possessed such skills.
I was going pretty slow, but yeah, concrete is pretty unforgiving and the left side of my body took most of the impact. Can't see any bruises - even more disappointing without war scars to prove!
Rarely do I take meds and that means they work pretty well when I do ;)

So right about now you're taking a ride and looking back at your bike thinking
WTF, these pain meds are the bomb!
That is completely from my skateboarding days. I really had the worst injuries as a skater, but developed some very good injury avoidance instincts after a few years of skating.
After you do this:
for the first time, you do everything you can never to do it again. And the slam instinct just sort of kicks in 😂

It's a nice looking afternoon, and I still need those teabags!
Even though my wheels failed me to some extent at the weekend, i think i'd still go for rubber over weird leg contraption thing as above. I bet the cornering on that is shocking! (Also, is that why the coffee is a 'good price' at your local bike shop? :) )
Never really understood skateboarding. It must be the most dangerous sporting activity going. Once you can skate, is it then compulsory to perform sink or swim tricks like the railing? Bunch of nutters!

Definitely, you should get out. A Brit without tea is a dangerous combination 😂
Ha ha, yes the coffee is a good price, and the repairs cheap... But you come home with a strange looking bike 😂😂
You hit the nail on the head about skating. It's insane, pure and simple.
Once you learn how to Ollie and pop a few kickflips and grind blocks etc, it just sort of snowballs. The best way I can describe it is a bit like a drug experience if I'm honest. When you get to the point where you're advanced enough to go at rails etc, it is an extremely intense adrenaline high. I stopped when I was about 30 cause the doctor told me that I was risking permanent damage to my knees. But I can still remember the feeling of cruising about the city centre with music in my ears jumping on and off pavements, ledges, weaving through traffic even. That feeling of the city being like a playground is the best thing. The big tricks on rails etc, are something different. It's like pure adrenaline and buzzing off that with a bunch of other nutters, egging each other on to do more insane stuff. I don't miss that really, but the cruising through town creatively using the cityscape, I miss that big time. I still have dreams where I'm crusing about from spot to spot, never falling off my board no matter what I attempt. Ha ha, the dream is smoother than what the reality was.

We are more at risk on the road, and that's without self-caused accidents.
I agree though, cycling around in the sunshine (not the rain and the slippery surfaces it brings) is one of my favourite pastimes :)

Any over the top of the handle bars? Too many of those for me!
One I do remember, that didn't hurt as I was on grass, was after swapping bikes with a friend and finding out his brakes were on different sides to mine. What was supposed to be an 'epic skid' turned into a very amusing (for them) flight over the bars :D

We can always trust on friends to point and laugh when such things happen :)
This one happen when I was a kid. I was biking on a circular walking track and beside this track was a little swamp. On the other side of this swamp was a baseball field. Connecting the two was a small home made wooden bridge which at the time looked to be flush to the ground. I (full speed ahead) decided to zoom onto the bridge into the baseball field area. It was at this time I found out that the bridge was a few inches above ground level but I didn't notice due to the green grass that was also a couple inches long. I never did get to the baseball field as I biked back home with a massive headache after going over the top of the handle bars and smashing into the ground/wooden bridge.

I'm happy I'm not dead because of a cycling fuck-up. When I was in my teens I would go down a steep long hill where we lived reaching a maximum velocity of about 70-80 km/h on several occasions. The bike I had was ordinary bicycle and I wasn't wearing a helmet, of course, because bicycle helmets weren't a thing back then. There was a three-way intersection at the bottom of the hill. I shudder to think what could've happened if a car coming from the right had not stopped and I had run into it or if something had got stuck between the spokes of a wheel. The brakes would've been nearly completely useless at that speed. I was suffering from the same young man's illusion that has and always will make the typical young man perfect cannon fodder.

That is some serious speed with only leg power!
I'll wear a helmet if i'm going on a longer trip, but still (stupidly) don't wear one for shorter trips.
Yep, so when do we call it a day and grow older and wiser? :)

I have cut down my cycling as well as it seems that age is not our side when it comes to recovery. I fell off my bike months ago (completely my fault) and it not only hurt more than usual but the aches persisted far too long. So I think that the risk/reward is getting past the point of return and will only use my cycling for strolls in thr park with the family.

Yes I am wondering how long it will take this time before I shake (perhaps not the correct word) the current aches off.
I could walk to the store, but the bike shaves 30/40 minutes off the trip and so I rarely use that option. And Mallorca is a great place to own a bike when the long days of summer arrive. Perhaps I'll think twice about taking it out when the floor is wet though!

Yes it does hurt more. I must say I don't understand why the same falls they seems not to hurt as bad in childhood. My last 360 left me in the middle of the road, fainted, and my tummy bruised for another week. The last one when I was with my friends from Porto to Santiago was the funniest ever. I was happy chatting with one of them in the front on a vineyard and one small little trench I missed send me on the ditch to the right under a pile of leaves. I had my bike and my luggage on top of me and I couldn't stop laughing. I hope you are getting better fast and get back on the saddle as there is the fun :)

Codeine on the other hand! Thats some trippy stuff BUT do make sure to take enough (of whatever kind) pain meds. Cracked ribs cause more damage with not proper breather and coughing and because of that pneumonia which is bigger issues than just pain. (which will surely make you even lose more weight faster than your mom approves)
be sure to include others in your next crash to make it a big more spectacular oke?
