During the summer we cycled on the Monsal Trail in the Peak District, Derbyshire, UK. The trail is accessible to cyclists, walkers, dog walkers with access for wheelchair users and buggies at Bakewell Station. The trail is on the disused Midland Railway line between Chee Dale and Bakewell, Derbyshire, UK.
In 1981, a big part of the trail opened but four railway tunnels remained closed due to safety issues. However, you could still navigate around the tunnels using the public footpaths in place. In 2011, the four railway tunnels - Headstone Tunnel, Cressbrook Tunnel, Litton Tunnel, Chee Tor Tunnel opened to the public. The longer tunnels are approximately 400 metres long and are lit during the day time by a light sensor. It is still better to take a torch with you or switch your lights on if cycling. On a hot day you will feel the cold as soon as you enter the tunnels.
At the beginning of the trail there is the Hassop Station cafe, cycle hire, book and gift shop. There's plenty to see on the trail, Monsal Viaduct, Cressbrook Mill, Litton Mill, Lime Kilns and the old railway platforms.
On our return journey a tawny owl suddenly swooped down and sat on the fence. You don't usually see them during the day so I'm not sure if something disturbed it. It looked fine on the fence and we had a few seconds to take a photograph before it flew off.
This popular cycle route was about 8 1/2 miles long. There was a slight incline going but I didn't find it too strenuous. The scenery was beautiful especially when we looked over the viaduct. Hopefully, we can do it again.
