Chris Froome increased his overall lead in the GC after another gruelling stage in this year's La Vuelta, as Miguel Angel Lopez puts in an impressive performance to take the stage victory.
The Colombian finished at the 2,150m high summit alone after overtaking ORICA's Adam Yates in the final 4km of the stage. Froome countered Nibali's attack on the final climb and widened his advantage over the Italian by 6 seconds.
Russia's Ilnur Zakarin moved into the podium places, taking third overall, by finishing second behind Lopez - 36 seconds off the pace.
Froome was once again helped to a strong finish by his teammates Wout Poels and Mikel Nieve, with Nieve finishing fifth.
An exhausted Yates, who is yet to win a stage at a Grand Tour, was caught in the final 4km, almost coming to a halt as Lopez raced past him.
