Dad Tip of the Day: Give kids brain teasers, such as puzzles, to help develop their critical thinking skills.
My son Jacob has been loving puzzles lately. He wants to do them over and over again, and likes some hard ones and some easy ones – he doesn’t discriminate! It has been great watching him struggle through the puzzles and to help him when he occasionally gets stuck or frustrated.
While he has been doing these puzzles, I feel like he is getting smarter and his critical thinking skills are getting stronger right before my eyes. This has been so much the case, that I decided to look up and see if there are any listed benefits to doing puzzles for kids… there is! Here is a list I found on the following website: https://b-inspiredmama.com/benefits-of-puzzles-for-kids/
- Puzzles are a Self-Correcting Learning Tool
- Language Skills (describing/explaining along the way)
- Math Skills (categorizing/organizing)
- Eye-Hand Coordination
- Fine Motor Ability
- Social Skills (when doing puzzles with people)
- Developing Persistence
- Adaptable and Abstract Thinking
- Spur Imagination and Creativity
As you can see, there are quite a few benefits from that list that make sense when it comes to kids and puzzles. Here are a couple of pictures of Jacob working on some puzzles:
So the next time your kids want to watch TV or play video games, perhaps a good alternative is to do a puzzle together! Not only is it fun, but it also has many benefits for the kids!
I would love to hear any thoughts/experiences you have on this topic!
Brian

How are you my friend? every day I will tell you how much I admire you as a father, it is unfortunate how most parents let their children spend all day glued to a computer or tv, your advice is very true to children especially in that age of Jacob you have to put activities that help them develop
The puzzle also helps the child to work the fine motor of the fingers through the manipulation of the pieces
Greetings to your beautiful family and thanks for such good advice

Hello friend @brian.rrr I was reading a bit and I think it's great that children entertain themselves in jigsaw puzzles as they say they develop skills and their intellect is more advanced, so they can take advantage of their free time, among many things like those that exile in your post .. I congratulate you for your post as a teacher I use these instruments for those students with difficulty of concentration and motor skills,

I have two daughters. Now they are adults, but when they were young I used to play with them all kinds of games. They loved puzzles and they always asked for more puzzles and for more difficult ones. As the difference of ages was a little more than one year, they could play together or alone. One of the "puzzles" they loved was "geography". I had a terrestrial globe very colorful and they loved to discover where each country was. As they grew and learned to read, this game developed to know the capitals or a few geographic marks. It was very fun and both loved it. I miss that time...

It would seem that it is more entertaining and healthy, although they tend to lose their patience quickly, also very good your contribution with your child so that it will speed up the mind.

Children can easily be distracted by completing the puzzles, they can improve teamwork, the ability to think and analyse how each piece is connected and it is also a lot of fun. Mostly when you're doing the puzzle with other people.

The puzzles are incredible games, it's a pity that these games are slowly losing value and few adults encourage their children to use them.

Hello friend, as a grandmother and because of the experience that I have a hundred percent support your advice, a tip for school for parents I love when you write about your family life how different the world would be if parents apply these tips you give, sometimes I see with sadness that modern parents give their children the whole day in a computer and I see that children become invisible to the world, going back to the puzzles, they are entertaining, and there are many shapes and colors, which activate and oxygenate the brain of all those who like to assemble puzzles or memory games, so once again congratulations for being part of a family worthy of example, a greeting in the extensive distance to Kristine, Kendra, Jacob and of course to the grandmother. friend @ brian.rrr

Children need to be stimulated and that better than with dynamic games and that we can share with our children, in this way we give attention, contribute to the development of their skills and create bonds.
