Dear @DtubeDaily on @Dtube #128 // do we need more paid bounties for steem bug hunters?

in daily-vlog •  6 years ago

So we had the little bug/blip the other day that took the chain down for a while while everything was re-syncing and getting over it’s temper tantrum but from an outsiders perspective that has no connection with the platform it’s probably enough to turn someone off from using it, especially when you pay to have your company at a conference and have a massive marketing effort to then have your site down a few days later (probably when they have travelled home to check it out)

So yeah, got me thinking, we have all these wonderful apps built on top of the blockchain but I was wondering do we have a go to place for ‘bug hunters’ to get bounties? — I mean surely all the platforms running on top of the blockchain could come together on this, like little onboarding incentives from each platform maybe?

if the intention is to scale the platform both infrastructure wise then I assume the marketing and feel good factor should scale alongside too right and I’m sure we have a bunch of white hat and black hat people that need to put food on the table too, why not make the chain even more battle tested than it already is and have a dedicated team paid bounties for bug hunting.

It’s kinda a hard sell to tell people about the blockchain that it’s this decentralised utopian place when the chain appears to act centralised when all applications hook into it — I went to a bunch of sites when the chain was down and we really need to work on the look of pages when we have issues, maybe explainer videos, off site guides and help to point people too — otherwise the momentum is lost when you want to show how powerful and decentralised something is and none of the sites can connect.

I realise these things happen, I realise that it’s been 19 iterations already, that’s because I’ve been around to know the effort and the determination that goes into the chains upkeep but if we want to be able to back our story about it being robust we need to also communicate that robust messaging when the chain has these hiccups.

p.s — props to all your ‘coalface’ admin ninjas that got things sorted in an incredibly timely fashion, I’m just suggesting an image damage limitation for people on the outside looking in for the first time.
