I guess chickens eat Johnson grass! they were quick to spread it all over with the rest of the leaves.

Am I supposed to be raking the leaves periodically for deep mulch? They're pretty wet from the last couple rains. I'll read a couple more articles about it when I wake up.

Everyone, @mariannewest recommends a few free chicken courses in her last podcast. I'm gonna sign up for at least one this weekend.

Only one of the courses is free :) And the chickens are supposed to do the work with the deep mulch. They will look for bugs and fungi to eat and scratch it all up. Especially since it rained - there should be yummies growing for them.

Kinda what I figured. I left it alone.

I like lazy systems like that :)

howdy this fine Friday sir! I have no idea about the question but I'll come back later to learn from your knowledgeable commenters!

Oh man, it was such a busy day! Didn't get much done on steem, so...

Howdy and happy Saturday @janton! Y'all get some rain over that way?

sir nateonsteemit! yes sir it is like heaven over here, just a steady soft rain that is soaking in. and you guys? you probably posted about it, I haven't been on my feed yet today. you'll have alot of water collected for the chickens and such no?

Yes sir! Once we consolidate the harvest, we'll be over 60 gallons I think. Rained each of the last three nights and there's a chance for more tonight. It's been beautiful. Lots of little green things popping up all over the freshly watered yard.

haha! yes sir nateonsteemit it is so marvelous and relieving of the dry hard ground. Plus you get to see all those little green things coming up everywhere! lol. praise the Lord.

Be careful with Johnson grass. I can't tell from the picture but there are certain factors to that plant.

Don't trust what i am about to say as 100% as it is a collection of various sources for decades.

Johnson grass in times of drought contain levels of cyanide type toxins to the point of beimg lethal.

In springtime and in periods of adequate rain and fast growth the leaves have lower levels of toxins, but near the base and close to the root zones the toxins remain high.

This is why some farmers can and do bail johnson grass as feed for livestock, in some regions at specific times of year. Some farmers also feed pigs a considerable amount.

The other problem with johson grass is that if the plant gets physically ruffled, whipped around or disturbed, the toxins will increase rapidly, even in its fast growth cycle.

So the plant can appear to be in a low toxin growth cycle but if it has been disturbed it will be toxic. It is really difficult to keep track of that growth cycle and know that it is completely safe. Its one of those plants to be highly suspicious of toxicity.

The seeds are another matter, and safe to consume, no matter the growth cycle.

Hope that helps.

Oh nice. I'll look into that more. Don't wanna cyanide my chickens. Except two of the roosters. That would be okay.
