I'm getting to where I have to add the year to these now. It's been about a year since I first got chickens.
Today, the littles are tractoring through a forest of squash.
I picked this spot for the good shade and because it's easy for me to get to. It's hot outside y'all. I'm keeping waterers topped up good.
I've taken to putting the chicken feed straight into the ground to encourage scratching and it's really working well. These things are gonna be master foragers pretty soon. I'm hoping to get to where I won't have to feed them.
On that front, I've planted a whole bunch of chicken scratch out there. Can't wait to see their faces when they find it :)
All action for the good of all.
Nate.

The great thing about Easter Eggers is that they are part araucana, so they should be good foragers.

These little EEs are kicking butt on that front! The bigger ones, cream legbars (also with some araucana), are having a harder time with that. I think it's how they were raised. The older birds were on bare soil in a small paddock in a very conventional situation, so they had more time to forget how to forage. They didn't need to I guess.

Will they all be put together eventually? Perhaps the EEs can teach them.

They will be. I actually think I'll keep them closer together tomorrow so the legbars can observe. They're catching up well though. I think once that chickenness gets turned back on, it comes on quick.
The littles got out because of the foraging superiority that they displayed right off the bat, but I'm wondering if maybe that wasn't the best approach.

If encouraging ground feeding, and finding you can't put them on any area they weren't on in the last 30 days (or other chickens), feeding pumpkin seeds or another dewormer food would be a good idea. (Tip from Joel Salatin...)
Sounds like they are enjoying being out in their tractor. :))

So they can detect when parasites may be present and won't eat there? They're smarter than we give em credit for lol

No they can't detect parasites. They eat where there is food. If it happens to be where chickens were previously, they will pick up parasites with the food.

Oh, okay. So you're meaning as a prevention effort. That makes sense.
I think I remembered Joel saying something about if there's poo on the eggs, they have worms? Do you remember that bit?

No, never heard that one. Mostly if there's manure on eggs, it's because the nestboxes are dirty or they are laying in a dirty place.

You've been visited by @thistle-rock from Homesteaders Co-op.
Dropping their feed where you want them to forage is a great nurturing and learning effort. Chickens are not in my future, we are downsizing our "pets" as we age, for pets is what they would be, lol, but I am always happy to read about them!

Howdy @thistle-rock! Glad you stopped by :)
They're fancy pets here too. Fancy because they have jobs and earn their keep. And I like them better than pets lol
