#dailychicken with compost!!! #freerange today. I don't range the chooks all the time because we have a lot of Hawks, so I let them out when we're out here. They're doing chicken things all over the place today. Pooping and eating and digging and running around like chickens with their heads still on. I love #chickens!

I wonder when they'll be too big to worry about Hawks. I'd love to let them range full time, even though it's illegal here.

I'm harvesting the compost from their chicken run today and putting it on the big #hugelkultur bed. Spring us upon us and I'm behind all of a sudden!

I don't think they ever get too big for hawks to be interested. We've had hawks lurking for years, flying in circles and waiting for someone to become separated from the flock. Luckily, our big dog will run to the middle of the yard and bark at the sky if she notices the chickens acting nervous. Usually does the trick.

Good doggo! I don't have a dog, so I'll start barking at the sky myself. :)

Get somebody to record that!

I'm sure the neighbors will. It'll pop up in your FB feed one day and you can say "hey, I know that guy!"

The answer: NEVER! And if it's not hawks it could be the neighborhood dogs, or a raccoon...

Yeah, we have a lot of dogs around.

I'm kinda overprotective of them, but I haven't lost a bird yet. (That's a big yet.) I'm not looking forward to that day...

It was a really delightful day with the chooks all running around though!

I have to settle for watching them run around up at the barn. I can't be out there with them, and the predators are fierce here. Just Friday there was a red tail hawk sitting on the run posts, wishing and dreaming. We see the fox daily...

One of the things we may lose with the additions, is sitting at the kitchen table watching "Farm TV". It seems there might be a porch that gets in the way, unless we can redesign it to no block the view...

Our farm TV is out the kitchen window. I built the front of the run so we can see in and see them doing chicken things. It's my favorite view in the house, but all the views outside are even better. :)
