Daily Nature Fix: Nature's Palette of Stone. (Original Photos)

in dailynaturefix •  8 years ago

Hello Steemians and fellow nature buffs.  Today's daily nature nugget is about one colorful clump of rocks: Artist's Palette.  This formation is located in Death Valley National Park, near the Furnace Creek area.

^^^If you look close, you'll see a few people on the lower center ridge for scale reference.

This formation is a reminder of Death Valleys violent, ancient volcanic history.  The colors are produced by a variety of metals in the rock and how they react and oxidize with weather exposure.  Iron makes the reds and oranges, manganese creates the purple, and the decomposition of mica produces the greens.

^^^Approaching Artist's Palette.  Even from a distance it is quite striking.

^^^Another view from a hike.

If you ever visit the park, make sure you swing by and check out this colorful array of stone.  It a nice change of scenery compared to the somewhat monotone landscape.  It's located right off the highway and can easily be viewed from your vehicle!

Thanks for reading and I'll see you tomorrow!  - Adam

I've also been there 2 years ago, it's truly remarkable :-)
Your posts should get a lot more attention imho.

Sweet!! I'm glad you've been. It's a lot cooler to see in person, of course. And thanks for the vote of confidence with my posts. Maybe they'll catch on one of these days. I have a lot of material.

Cool! Never even heard of this @customnature. You planning any trips back? I drive through every time I go to the west coast but I never stop.

Ugh, you need to get your priorities straight. There's a ton a cool shit in Death Valley. I probably will get back there at some point if I catch super cheap flights to Vegas again. It's a great place to go camping in winter time.
